Anyone ever use general chemistry as a second language?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If it's anything like organic chemistry as a second language, it'll make a good supplementary book but you may still want to invest in a comprehensive gen chem textbook.

Check amazon for books with good ratings and buy a cheap used one. Gen chem is well enough established that if you have questions or need example problems, you could easily Google or YouTube it.

Ah yes! I learned to speak gchem in college:

Stoichiometry, sigma bond orbitals and heisenberg, ionization energy ksp!

if I remember correctly I said "Nice to meet you, what elemental tribe do you come from? I am carbon."

*edit*

I was wrong, I meant to type electron affinity not ionization energy! It appears I accidentally insulted your ancestors. Apologies.

Just to clarify:
There is a textbook: General Chemistry As A Second Language
You're wondering if people like this textbook.

I don't have experience with that book, but it took me a moment to get at exactly what you were asking.

Haha oh my God I didn't even think of it like that. Thanks for the laugh!

Silberberg is the standard at my institution and from my experience with it, I would definitely recommend it. The practice problems in it are certainly helpful for test prep

I'm going to retake the gen chem sequence this summer. I don't like the textbook we used last year. Anyone have any experience with this book?

I love this book. there are some obvious quantitative errors in the book, but if you master the material by following his book, they are easy to spot and will help you actually learn by finding the minor errors! The concepts are all accurate and thats all that matters. I wish I had found this book before starting the class, but I used it as reference and think itll be a good refresher when Mcats come along. I also wish he had a General Chem II book, as this only covers the 1st term. Speaking of which, does anyone have a 2nd semester gen chem II supplemental book they can recommend. Already have the O'chems from Klein too! Best of luck!!

i never heard of this book but used the organic chemistry as a second language book. Unbelievable, I could not fathom how I would have done in the class without it. I cannot recommend that series of books enough. Anyway, if its anything like the organic one I would recommend it

Same here and was so disappointed at what the thread was actually about 🙂
