Curious if anyone has externed at either Shand's Jacksonville Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL or Florida Hospital East in Orlando...and if so, what are your thoughts on the time you spent there??? Also, anyone know if these residency programs favor Barry grads (Im from OCPM)??? Thanks...

I don't start my externships until May, but from the research that i did prior to applying and after talking to Residents from both programs, I can tell you that both seem to pretty solid. I heard especially great things about the program in Orlando. I can also tell you that they do not favor Barry students. I know of many students in our class with extremely high grades and passing scores on Boards who were turned down from externing at Orlando just due to the high volume of applicants that they get from Barry as well as from outside Florida. Shands was not as difficult to get a month at, but I am fairly certain that they do not have a preference for Barry students either..hope this helps.

I externed at Shands in November. For me, it was an "okay" rotation but it wasn't for me for a number of reasons unfortunately.

I am from Scholl and there were students from FL, IA, and CA while I was there. So they obviously take students from all schools to extern.

The residents were from different schools as well, so I don't think they favor one school over the other.

yeah, I can tell you: u have to be there at 6 and listen to ortho grandrounds from 6-7, no podiatry involvement but u still gotta be there. One of the attendings is always mad and tyranting, kicking scrub techs out of the OR. Good resources, poorly managed, non-cohesive unit. Sad state of affairs, it could be so great, but is not even close, don't waste your time

...Good resources...
This was my impression of Shands-Jax also^. I visited the hospital a few months ago since I'll likely end up practicing in the Jax, StAug, or Daytona areas, and I was pretty impressed with the UF Shands Jax campus resources, trauma, strength of the ortho program, etc.

I can't really comment on how the overall pod resident experience is there. The clinic seemed busy and diverse during my day visit and they have extensive time on ortho trauma, but I've heard from classmates who did a month that overall surg volume per resident is adequate but not impressive. It's still a younger program (<10yrs old to my knowledge?), so it will surely continue to improve.

...Orlando is one I've not visited, but it's generally considered a pretty top notch program from everyone I talk with (current/alumni residents there, students who visited, etc). Two of their main attendings are a husband+wife from Barry who trained there (Amber Reeves) and West Penn (Chris). I've heard they're busy surgically, and they sure seem to put out some good ACFAS posters, text chapters, et and have a strong extern/applicant pool each year. I'd definitely visit there - and DeKalb - if you're considering southeast for residency choices. 👍
