Depends, whose list are we going off of? And top 20 in what? I followed the number 1 party ranking for my freshmen and sophmore years (and before KHE digs into me for this, I was not a crazy partier....)

👍 I'm going into optometry and I can proudly say I went to a top 20 university! (Top 20 in Nevada that is.... 😀 ) Who determines "top 20" anyway? Just curious... but why do you ask?

probably wants to know if only students from crappy schools are going to optometry school while all the top students are going to medical school

hahahaha too funny (and really - kinda sad)!

yes lots of my undergrad classmates went to med school, some went to dental and pharm some of the brightest went into research, but buy far the coolest, nicest and most near sighted are going to optometry school (that was a joke - no flamers) lots of "top 20" students go to optometry school just like lots of non top 20 go to med school

i noticed that too. a girl i knew since high school who turned down harvard and johns hopkins is going on to research. she was always top 10 in any class she took, a weeks ago she was really excited about getting into a program at harvard and i joked that when i have a heart attack from all the junk food im eating, ill have her perform surgery on me. much to my embarassment she was talking about the phd program and accused me of being a horrible friend that knows nothing about her ! 😱

another guy i did research with was talking about a doing a one year program after graduation. given his grades i was shocked, it turns out he needed to do an intensive math program to transition to a bioengineering program

to each his own !

I graduated from a "Top 20" school and I would say that most of the undergraduates I knew went into either Medical, Dental, or Optometry. I didn't know too many people going into Pharmacy just because everyone figured out how little patient contact you actually get. I knew a lot of people who did research as a student, but decided not to pursue it as a career. The students who decided to pursue optometry tended to be well-rounded individuals.

i dont think UCLA is a top 20 rank school , according to US News we are 25, but we are cool regardless

Alright Top 20 Public school.........

No dig. Many schools that have a reputation as being "party schools" also have very strong academic components as well.

And there's nothing wrong with partying. I did my share of partying. I think most of us did. Partying and goofing off are part of college life. (and optometry school life)

But I still think there needs to be some standard for admission. Thats all.

Berkeley has had people from Brown, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Michigan, Emery, and of course UCLA and Berkeley. No Harvard or Yale. They all went to Med School.

It was a preemptive strike. I mean, having viewed the past postings.... Anyway, I definitely agree with you. UW-Madison is an excellent school. Alas, it was only ranked 34th. Oh well, something new to feel bad about. Well, not really.

We need to move on from admission standards. They're in place already. Why beat a dead horse?

I ask this question b/c my brother went to a top school has a 2.7 science gpa and a 300 oat and has'nt been accepted or rejected anywear.

Is Duke a top 20 school? Last year, there was a person in my interview group at SUNY that was from there. When I heard that person's name at the Berkeley interview and no one responded, I assumed that that person was accepted to SUNY and decided to skip the trip to UCBSO.

i went to UNC-CH, i'll be @ NOVA as well. =))

UNC-Chapel Hill. It's not in the top 20. It is #27. 😎

Public schools, private schools. What a bunch of hooey 😴 .... My alma mater managed numbers 8, 34, 1, 12, 3.... Go Badgers, for being all over the place!

this is official - in class of 2014 at SUNY we have a girl who graduated from Yale. And the nicest one of all!

If Im not mistaken, admissions committee have access to a database that lets them research schools they have never heard of quickly. If not, they usually ask about your experience at your college/university if you are fortunate enough to get an interview.

With that said. a 2.7 at "top university" wont sit so well vs a 3.4 from a "wheredya go college?" if you were "smart" enough to get into a top school... you shoulda been "smart" enough to do better...

A top school won't inflate your grades to try to make themselves look good.

(Didn't see the earlier post) He's surprised with 2.7 and 300? That's totally weak. The standardized test is a good way to overcome the gpa differences. Too bad it has little weighting; they judge you by your gpa so they can narrow down the applicants and keep the fees - looking into each candidate's school is too time-consuming.

I'd call the admissions dept of the schools he really wants to get into and find out what areas of his application need improvement.

I did this once, and learned exactly what the program I got rejected from was looking for-- I took their advice and got in the next time I applied.

That said, they'll probably say that he needs to work on getting that OAT score up. If he's capable of getting into a top school, then he should be able to sit down with that big purple Kaplan book, memorize everything, and do MUCH better.

And it's funny to read these posts where people say, "Someone in my class went to highly ranked school A!" or "My school is ranked #B on this particular list!" as if that makes a person or optometry school look better. (No offense intended, of course.) School rankings should be taken with a grain of salt. I went to a top 20 school (middle of that pack). I could have gone to a "higher ranked school" but didn't because my undergrad basically gave me a free ride. Am I a better person than a graduate of a #30 school? Uh... No! In fact, in my personal experience, nobody seems to care what undergrad I went to. And that's probably a good thing because frankly, it shouldn't matter.

At SCCO, I've found many of my classmates who went to "lower" ranked schools to be amazing people academically, clinically, and personally. Also, my best friend went to a school ranked in the low 40's and she's in med school. I've met a lot of people who will be amazing medical and optometric physicians-- And it's not because of the rank of their undergrad.

Firstly, the idea that top schools are somehow exempt from grade inflation is completely baseless. Apparently, if your parents or a BOA loan is shelling out 80k a year for you to go to a top school, people expect to get good grades. My best friend went to Duke, and graduated with a 3.8....and so did about half the people he knew.

With that said, a 2.7 is STILL a very poor average, regardless of the place....BUT, it begs an even larger question: a 2.7 studying what? Basket-weaving? Golf? Mathematical theory? Nuclear engineering?

That, for me, is the big question. The reality is that a lot of biology departments, everywhere, are under a lot of pressure to "revamp" their grading methods to prevent "pre-med graveyards" of their bio and chem departments. I don't mean to be harsh, but an objective view of this would say "what else has the person done well, OTHER than get into a 'top 20 school'"? GPA is poor, standard test is mediocre....so what proof do we really have?

This all coming from someone that is in op school with a 3.0 GPA from Cal Poly, in chemical engineering, but a 390 OAT. You really need to see if he can retake that OAT and get a big jump. Otherwise, admissions just doesnt have enough positive stuff to go off of other than a school name.

I don't know about the list posted, but it's pretty subjective. When I went to my interviews, some schools considered my alma mater to be top 20 even though it's not on the list. I doubt that had that big of an effect on my admissions anyways though. Just get the grades!

grades arent good enough for optometry school. A 2.7 won't get you in anywhere no matter where you went.
