Can you tell me what your schedules are like during MS1? Do you operate on the quarter or trimester system? Are Anatomy, Histo/Embryo taught together? Are they tested simultaneously as well? Team taught? How many weeks per semester or trimester? What is your daily schedule like, ie how many hours in class per day? Thank you for any info you can provide.

Schedule:
start @ 8 am. It varies how late we go, but with anatomy, OMM, & Histo labs, it's usually until 4. Towards the end, we started classes @ 9, but most are at 8.

Trimester (13 wks)

Anat, Histo, Radiology, & Embryo are taught and tested together (it's one big exam called SPOM) in the 1st trimester. I guess it's team taught meaning that different profs teach different topics w/in each subject)

hope this helps 🙂

thank you. Is this for PCOM or UNECOM? Thanks again, it definitely helps figuring out which will be more to my "liking".

Sunny is talking about PCOM. We'll be wrapping up the first trimester next week and I only have good things to say about SPOM so far. The curriculum seems to be well coordinated.

This is going to take a bit, but I'm talking about UNECOM...

Anatomy Lecture/Lab - 3 days a week either 8a-noon or 1p-5p
this is broken up into Upper Limb, Lower Limb, Head and Neck, TAPP
we take a test in JUST anatomy after each section
Histology - 1 or 2 days a week we have 2 hour lecture plus 1 1/2 hour lab
this works with what we're studying in anatomy at the time - information is
separated into 4 histo only tests (I'll spare you the details of exactly what's on
each test because it'll probably change next year)
Embryology - 1 or 2 days a week we have 2 hour lecture
this is kind of wierd, we'll have 2 lectures one week, then none the next week,
then three lectures the next week, then none for 2 weeks. It's basically
corresponds to what we're studying in anatomy
OPP - every tuesday 1 hour lecture, 2 hours in lab - nough said
Foundations of Doctoring - 2 hours lecture, 2 hours in small groups learning interview/physical exam skills and having discussions every wednesday

Immunology and biochemistry start in a couple weeks (early november) and go through next semester. Embryo finishes in a couple weeks. Histo and Anatomy end at Christmas break final's week. If anyone is really interested I could send them an email with my daily schedule on it. PM me if your interested.

Basically, the take home message, at UNE all our classes have separate tests unlike some other schools... hope this is what you're looking for! (other current UNECOMers can add to this if they want)... best of luck

Jon, MSI at UNECOM

Don't forget that UNE has double the hours in Anatomy than most other medical schools and is second in the country in total hours spent on Anatomy, I believe JHMS is the only school with more. The strong program in Anatomy was THE biggest seller of the school to me.

Not to mention.. location... beach .. nature... reputation of preparing great doctors... to serve New England.. and other states. Great rotations and success on exams.

as of this year we're actually the longest...

At UNECOM the anatomy class is team taught (e.g. One instructor may teach head and neck while another may teach TAP [Thorax, abdomen, pelvis]).

Histology which is a longer course, is usually team taught as well, but with the lectures usually being done by one instructor (Dr. Bell) and the lab pieces being taught together by two instructors, plus assistants.

The OPP is taught by a team of instructors, but many of the lectures are given by the head instructor.

I'll tack on info re. class hours, since I have a life and family outside med. school:

FOD, OPP, and Gross Lab (sometimes lecture) are mandatory attendance. This accounts for approx. 16 min. hrs. p/wk. It's longer depending on preceptorships and scheduled labs. The rest of the courses are not man. unless specified by staff. This leaves room for studying in the way that suits you the best. I like that.

Faculty members are extremely accessible as well.

:luck:
