I've done quite a bit of shadowing, and nothing has bothered me too much. I'm applying right now, but occasionally when shadowing I get grossed out by things. Not so much smells, but like when watching certain surgeries, like an apicoectomy or a really deep wisdom tooth extraction. Normal stuff, like root canals, crowns, fillings, etc. don't bother me, nor do needles. Just some of the really bloody, intense surgeries.

Should I be concerned? Obviously I don't want to do OMFS or Endo, but I know I'll see some of that stuff going into gen. dentistry.

I don't really think it will bother me when it comes time to see and do some of this stuff, but do you guys know of people who have gotten a bit queasy at times? Can you get used to it?

The first day shadowing my uncle I saw a full mouth extraction for dentures performed. It was awesome!

What procedures dentists do mainly seems to depend largely on where they practice. A dentist practicing in a richer neighborhood will perform very few extractions and do almost exclusively restorative work. A dentist practicing in a poorer neighborhood will have a lot of his/her patients opt for extractions. I shadowed a dentist in decent city in Florida, and I saw zero extractions done. Crown/bridges, fillings, cosmetic dentistry, and trauma counseling were the only things I saw. On the other hand, my uncle practicing in rural Maine performs just about every procedure but those in orthodontics with the exception of Invisalign.
