Has anyone heard from their programs yet? It's tough enough to figure out a 4th year schedule, but not knowing what externships you may/may not get makes it even worse. Just wondering how everyone else is doing... Good luck to all!

you should write the program directors and tell them what dicks they are for not notifying you sooner.

I applied for a visiting elective at Emory for the month of August, sent in the app in early april. Called them two weeks later to see if they got it and to find out when I would find out if I had a spot. Well they got it and stated that they usually know by early June and notify the students. I informed them that since I was applying for August, early June may be cutting it a bit late in case I did not get the elective and would have to try to find another elective at another institution. They said to call in early May and they might know more then.

Fast forward 2 weeks to early May and found out that they had not even started on their own students' schedules yet. Was instructed to call again in 2 weeks and they might know more then.

Fast forward to late May, was informed that they were just finishing the Emory students' schedules and would soon be starting on visiting apps and that I should call back in ONE week ("wow" I thought...making some real progress).

I waited a full 10 days...just to ensure sufficient passage of time. Called late last week and was informed that since they finished the Emory schedules, they would now have to work on the Morehouse students' schedules before they started on visiting students' applications. Also, instead of calling, I was told that I would be informed via e-mail.

So while I was being teased and strung along, I of course, did not send any visiting apps anywhere else. I think the worst part is that I cannot even become angry or upset when I speak to them over the phone b/c all of the ladies that work in the student affairs office all speak with the most polite and gentle southern draaawwwll. Think Paula Deen (if you watch food network) to the max.

So now I sit and wait by the e-mail machine until the magical day that it tells me I've got mail.

I warned you 😎

I understand your frustration. I applied for fall rotations at various programs and finally managed to reach one of the programs by phone yesterday. The good news is that I will now have at least one of the aways that I wanted. The bad news is that the elective period I was offered conflicts with every possible date at another one of my top choice programs. But what can you do, right? I'm happy to take what I can get at this point. I hope everything works out for you, as well!

I feel your pain on the Emory front. I went through basically the same thing last year. I eventually had to have them fax me an acceptance letter in mid-July because my school was getting antsy about approving the rotation and I still had nothing but an over-the-phone acceptance for an August rotation. (I was definitely bugging them to death over the phone by mid-July!)
I ended up finally getting their housing list literally 12 days before I was scheduled to START the rotation. I was not impressed. I was even less impressed when I got a 'delinquent tuition' bill from Emory in January despite having paid all the fees back in August. Not the most organized office, obviously.
Good luck 😛

And here I thought I was the only one struggling with this. I wish I had known what a pain in the ass this whole away elective thing is!!! I finally nailed something down over the phone (second choice month, second choice elective), and now they won't send me any kind of confirmation to take to the registrar at my school. How frustrating!!! Good luck to everybody, sounds like we all need it 🙂

im not sure its wise to advocate persuing externships over the phone... you could just as easily antagonize the same the person that's doing all the scheduling for your residency interviews. i say relax, be confident, be patient.

Thanks for the advice - I totally agree that annoying phone messages are not a good thing to have associated with my name 🙂

I actually received a phone call from GW because my requested month was not available and she wanted to discuss an alternate block to schedule. I was really surprised that it was via phone - seems so informal!!

And I know, I know - I'll be patient and relax 🙂
