hi everyone,

i'm new to SDN and was just wondering if anyone else is headed for UVA this fall. any opinions, recommendations, warnings or just "hey me too!"s are totally welcome.

i absolutely loved the school when i visited, although i have to admit i have some reservations about how isolated charlottesville is. also, what's with the 62% women for this year's M1 class?

although my state school is a great place and the price is tempting, i'm pretty sure i'm gonna be a cavalier next year. just curious to see if there are any potential future classmates out there. 🙂

Hey cornelius. I'll be attending UVa in the fall as well  I'm certainly looking forward to it! Oh, and don't be worried about having nothing to do in Charlottesville. I live there now (i'm an undergrad at uva) and there are a tons of things to keep me busy. There's always downtown, the corner district, and lots of new music. I look forward to meeting you in a few months 🙂

Congratulations to you both! I'm currently a 2nd year at UVA and I love it here. Cornelius, don't worry about not having anything to do, you won't have time anyway. 🙂 Seriously though, there is no lack of opportunity if you want it, we get emails all the time about parties, events, etc. from classmates. Hey, the entire med school agrees on a place to go drinking every Thurday night and we get drink specials. Also, DC is only 2 hours away and a lot of people go there for weekends (when it's not close to exams). Richmond is 1 hour away. You're going to be spending so much time at the school, that if you loved it, that's what's most important, not it's location, which really isn't bad.

hey,
I am also a uva undergrad who's planning on sticking around here in Charlottesville for four more. Depending on where you come from, you may or may not find it isolated. There is definitely plenty to do here though. I think the area is gorgeous. At first I thought I probably wanted a change of scenery, but I don't think it gets a lot better than this unless you are looking for a true city environment. Look forward to seeing you here.

Well due to the recent barrage of rejections, it's starting to look like I might end up at UVa. I loved the area when I visited the school. For the people who are already there, do you know what kind of options are there as far as buying a house/condo/townhouse. I was looking on realtor.com and it wasn't really showing many townhouses or anything, and houses looked pretty decrepit for under 200K, but for some cities realtor.com doesn't list a lot of places. Are there any places in particular that you know about, or can you tell me anything about price ranges that I'll most likely be up against? I'm just wondering how feasible it would be to buy a place and build equity over 4 years rather than rent. Do many students pursue this option or is renting the norm? Thanks in advance for the help.

I will be attending UVa in the fall as an out-of-state resident. I loved the school and the location and the fact that they give pretty generous need-based aid. It's a great school and it has been one of my "dream" schools. Good luck to all and has anyone heard back from the fin aid office yet?😕

ccCrazie - the host i stayed with when i interviewed there actually bought her condo (brand new, really nice, 10 mins from campus.... in a complex with a lot of old people though, not really students) and was planning on living in it all 4 years. she rented out one of the rooms to another girl and claimed it had already paid for itself, and she was an M1. although she didn't say how much it cost, she told me that several of her friends were doing the same thing, so i take it it's a pretty common practice? not a bad idea, esp if you are planning to stay in the VA area after med school, or can share the place with some classmates. if you're interested, let me know and i can find out more from my host for you.

aquaboy - i sent my finaid packet in about a week ago, and was told it would take 3-4 weeks...? not sure if that'll happen, but so they say.

alright! one by one, we're slowly assembling a class

 hope to see you all in the fall!
