Just wondering if anyone has interviewed at UT Memphis yet? MAGICIAN- I noticed you had an interview there initially but it's been removed from the interview board. Did you cancel or already have it?? I was curious about this program. Anyone know anything about it??

cancelled. i do not have time.

Oh I see. What dates were they offering you? Or did you even get to that point?

this is kind of annoying, because I called and e-mailed and still could not set a date...😴

It seems they want me to schedule for October, but I just can't go!

Seriously considering cancel it...🙁

Magician.. don't abandon us... :scared:

Having difficulty scheduling an interview would seem like a potential red flag. Everyone I've talked to at every institution I've recieved an invite from has been very friendly and very helpful...

well I was also surprised to hear that they're interviewing this early. seems like they want to get interviews done by the end of nov, and that's when things are just starting up for other places. i don't know about the program itself but i know that memphis has made the list of 10 worst places to live.

they are actually EXTREMELY nice and helpful in scheduling date.

Red flag? Don't think so.. took long maybe because my schedule is tight and the coordinator had to check the dates I suggested with the PD

Fortunately, they sent me the dates, and the preferable dates I mentioned before ,...! Great!! 👍

No red flags anymore.🙂

I agree, the problem is my level of anxiety and the need to coordinate interviews with other things in my agenda... 😉

It's not the first program that kind of push me to interview in October...

PURPURA, just curious what kind of dates they offered? was there anything as late as Jan, or were they trying to get things done by the end of the year? thanks.

Does anyone know anything about the program?

I interviewed there two cycles ago. To be frank, I thought it was terrible. Maybe they have improved since then, but it seems that they have to scramble every year. I have a family member that trained there back in the day and apparently it was a good program at one time, but from my experience that have fallen woefully behind their peers in the Southeast.

I had a very hard time getting in touch with them to schedule the interview. Because of a conflict with another program I had to reschedule, which they seemed to have no problem with. However, when I showed up for my interview they had no idea I was coming nor did they "remember" that I had rescheduled. Lunch consisted of a boxed lunch in a cramped meeting room in the corner of the department. This wouldn't be much of an issue if it weren't for the other deficiencies, not to mention that the programs that they are competing against are taking you to nice French restaurants, etc. They did give us access to the residents, which I guess was good.

Check the program out for yourself if you don't have a lot of other interviews, but I am at a Southeast program and other residents here had similar experiences. UT-Memphis should have a much better program than what they currently have. There are many, many better programs in the Southeast if you are geographically limited. Proceed with caution.

Thanks for your input.. It will be useful!

I take into account everything when I am evaluating a program... even the invitation e-mail and how quickly and efficiently they reply can tell a little about programs organization and overall members attitude...

😉

I liked it a lot. The program is mid-to-small, and the residents are excellent and supernice. We went out to a very nice restaurant, all paid by the department. The facilities are a bit spread all over, so you'll need a car if you go there. The buildings are relatively new and well maintained. The attendings are very dedicated and helpful; I didn't detect any hint of malignancy.

Memphis downtown is very touristy and packed with southern style bars. It's very clean and none of the residents ever felt unsafe. It's a surprisingly small city for my liking, but nothing that would deter me from living there. The real estate is very affordable; every resident that I spoke with owned his/her house. Southern food is very high on fat, and you better like fried catfish if you go there.
