Anyone just opt out of the match anymore?

Just curious, back in the day the old schoolers would simply put a CV together, send it to PDs of places they liked, maybe do a away rotation or 2 between 3rd and 4th year and simply get a letter (mine came in November of my senior year) saying I would like to offer you a spot in our training program at BWH etc.....does that happen anymore? I had not met a single person from my med school who had ever done the match for pathology....I assumed there wasnt one in fact until I went to a Stanford interview.

What happened? They crack down on this or something? What happened to all the O.G.'s??

I think they really cracked down on this..
I used to know of a residency director who sort of skirted the match.
(comes down to the fact that you can't offer a contract for the First year of residency)

now a days I think everyone used the Match (at least for US grads)

Everybody I know went through the match. There were some people who basically knew where they were going due to mutual expressions of love but they still went through the match.

I don't think they are allowed to offer contracts outside the match except in special circumstances - which include someone who is more than a year out of med school, foreign grads, and I think MD/PhD but I am not sure.

That is the official rule that I was told last year when I applied. Of course, there are exceptions here and there and involve some kind of special circumstance but I haven't heard of many stories where people got a position in pathology outside of the match.

Foreign grads (like myself) can still be offered spots outside the match, provided the program participates. I guess if there is one "advantage" to studying abroad, this is it.

Do you have any idea if this applies to other specialties? say radiology?

Well, I have friends in both Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology who were offered spots. Radiology is tough to get for foreign grads anyway, so they usually don't offer spots outside the match. I would say that the more competitive the match, the less likely a program would offer a spot to an IMG.
