Hi,

Does anyone know where I can take an accredited biochem course, and get credit for it, online?

Thanks,
Sonya

I am not sure if you can take a chemistry class on-line and receive credit for the laboratory component. If you are asking if you can receive credit for Biochemistry lecture without lab credit then I am sure that if you live in a really large city, many large state and city colleges/universities are now offering classes "on-line", in that, you can view the class lecture via streaming video on the internet, but you would still have to go a class to take the paper test (and/or attend the laboratory lecture in the classroom if you want credit for it). I have take a human physiology class like this last semester.

Online courses are generally not recommended though...but if you're applying this year and got in, it'll be fine...but why risk it?

I was wondering the same thing. I'm out of school and really like UMich (will here back from them this week since I heard they got back within a few days). But they have a biochem requirement. I'm trying to get out of it, but if I can't, an online course where I didn't have to miss a lot of work would be great.

I know RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology http://distancelearning.rit.edu/ ) has an online Biochem course. (I took it) You do have to buy videos of all the lectures though and watch them, so you don't really save any time, but you can do it all at home. It's actually a pretty tough course, but I highly recommend it. (Note: it's a 10 week course because RIT is on a quarter system)

Thanks everyone.

Mayo (and U Mich, and several other schools require biochem). I work during the day, so it's kindof hard to take classes. Right now, i'm just considering all my options.

I know some school may not prefer online. but, i can check with individual schools. i am applying this year, but I haven't received an acceptance yet.

Keep the posting other places you know of.

And yes, I live in a big city (chicago). So there is the possibility of enrolling in classes.

UC Berkeley Extension Online has a biochem course:

Do any of you know anything about this UC Berkeley Extension course?

I was going to take biochem at a CalState school over Winter Quarter, but this is actually a few hundred dollars cheaper and would allow me greater flexibility(and a lot less driving).

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

Is anyone planning to take the biochem course offered by UC Berkeley or has anyone taken it already?

I'm going to take it starting January.

Any suggestions? Advice? Comments?

Holy cow! I was just signing up for a biochem course (Utah also requires it) and my course was looking like $2,200 (nonresident).

This Berkeley course looks great and $475 ! 😱 Such a deal ...

Do others think this would be acceptable to most medschools? I like biochem so this online thing would work well for me -

i just finished mcb 100 (biochem) at berkeley. you don't need to do anything special to do well in the class...just have to memorize a lot of stuff, so if you keep up with the material, you'll be fine.

Yeah, the price of taking a single course can be astronomical. . . $500 is hardly a steal, but it's manageable so that's why I'm taking the Berkeley online course. I'm a little nervous that medschools will look down on it. . but if I'm already accepted, what can they do?

For my last semester undergrad I will be taking bio-chem required course. Does everyone agree it is okay to take pass/fail since I am already accepted but need the course for the requirements? I'd like to take it easy my second semester and taking bio-chem pass/fail would be a great way to start. Anyone know if this is alowable for those schools requiring the bio-chem? Of course, I should call school -- but just wondering others opinion?
