I played classical music (clarinet) for 13 years before entering med school and was able to keep it up somewhat during 1st year of med school through the university orchestra. Ultimately, I decided that particular orchestra wasn't worth it; they played music that wasn't that challenging or enjoyable for me to be putting in so much rehearsal time.

I've been exploring community ensembles because I miss playing so much. However, I'm a 3rd year now, and while I've had pretty good hours so far (EM and FM), I know it's going to get bad. has anyone managed to keep playing in med school?

Basically I'm asking, would it be a horrible idea to try to join one of these groups on an as-needed basis?

I'm a lazy singer and never learned to play any other instrument with proficiency. Also didn't sing for about 10 yr but was able to join the philharmonic chorus during M1. Great experience and my favorite part of the week. Musically speaking it was a bit of a stretch because they needed soprano IIs and I had never learned to read below the top line of the score 🙂 I am a much better musician now.
For us rehearsal was doable, 2 hr/wk, but worse during concert week (10 hr with the concert). Not too bad overall until the Christmas concerts coincided with finals week....

there are 4 girls in my class who formed a string quartet. they are amazing and have started playing weddings together. they recently played in a ceremony for the school, and are contemplating practicing in our atrium during lunch so some of us can listen. ask around and see what classmates would be interested!

Have you ever tried a wind quartet or quintet?

I did play in a quintet back in high school, it was a lot of fun. Now though, I'm not sure I'd be able to get the right people/instruments together. The few people who still play instruments either play strings or have gone the guitar/bass/drums (and formed their own band) route.

What I really want is an orchestra, but that's going to be hard since I play clarinet and there isn't really room for a clarinet player who can only be there sometimes (unlike a string).
