Anyone Prematch in Neuro?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know of 3 people who were offered 3 prematch at a Northeastern location with great fellowships...For some reason or another, none of them took the offer.

What exactly does that mean? I've heard the term a few times, but I'm unclear as to how exactly one goes about prematching.

From what I understand, those independent applicants such as DO's and FMG's can prematch, the residency program will make them an offer for a residency position, a specific time period is given to accept or decline and a contract is signed by both parties if the person decides to accept.

I know of some individuals who have prematched into Family Medicine and Pathology as early as Nov/Dec but have never heard of one in Neurology

So they can "prematch" in a certain window of time, but when do they "match"?

You can prematch whenever a residency program gives you an offer/contract. My understanding is this typically occurs from october through dec/jan. If an independent applicant does not receive a prematch offer they enter the match as usual. Also as I understand it, US allopathic students are not eligible for prematch offers as they must go through the typical match process.

I am at an osteopathic school so I hear of a few prematch offers every year, all of the students I know who have received a prematch offer rotated at the specific program and received prematch offers shortly after their rotation was over.

When you prematch, you are [hopefully] given a contract to sign at which point you remove yourself from the NRMP match.
