anyone receive an interview invite from UIW yet?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What is the class size supposed to be? There doesn't seem to be any threads about this school.

It's supposed to be around 60. they aren't set yet. could be more or less. I applied there because I'm going to school next year and have only been waitlisted or rejected, so I need to get accepted somewhere before that can be a reality.

Hey,
Can I ask what your stats are, what schools you were rejected from and when you applied.

I'm also applying to UIW, thats my first choice.

Questions you might want to ask yourself:
1)Are you willing to gamble $150,000 on an optometry program that has not been fully accredited?
2)Will senior docs hire you? There is always a lot of stigma associated with new programs and the quality of docs they produce.
3)Will I pass my board examination?

If your application is weak, I would suggest retaking classes to boost your GPA, retaking the OAT, and/or applying for a masters program in the sciences. In my opinion, all the above are better options than to just be accepted 'anywhere'.

Good luck!

Yeah I have a 350 aa and 340 ts OAT a 3.03 gpa with a 2.6 science. I honestly think it looks like it will be a pretty good school, and it's in a good location. There hasn't been a school who has applied for accreditation and not received it, so I don't figure it's much of a risk.

I believe that UIW has received their initial accreditation. My cousin attended NOVA in their first or second year of existance (not sure?), and he had a great experience. He is in private practice and loves Optometry.

I spent 8 years in the military and am now in my third year in OD school. I was stationed in Sanm Antonio for 2 years. Would have applied and most likley attended UIW if they had a school back then.

What I learned in last 5 years is that all school meet the standards, but all have strengths and for sure all have weaknesses. I interviewed at 6 schools and got accepted in 5. One school took 8 weeks to send me a letter for the interview. I had made up my mind by then.

I am happy where I am. Be careful about advice from people here. I recived very poor and self serving comments from similar forums when I was applying. I was told not to attend my current school because the school is not very good and nobody will hire you. Horse****, everyone that graduated from my school is working with most are in private practice. they are all licensed, and doing great.

Even now as I am thinking about residencies, I am getting bad advice that I should not do a residency. 20% of the class above me are doing residencies.

We as students get very impressed by what other people feed us. Which is not always the best information.

Best of luck to you

I got an interview!!! I'm pretty excited!! I'll be going there on April 13th!

Anyone know the stats of how many people have been accepted? How many seats taken?

hey, the only information tht i know is tht in the first three interviews tht were conducted almost all the students were from texas, and im pretty sure tht some seats are probabaly taken i would say around 15. i am one of those who have accepted their seat. as far as stats are concerned, i don't have any information abt tht.

I interviewed over 2 wks ago with 2 others. One was from MN, an older girl from NY/Nj area and me from UT.

I had an awesome interview experience. I also really liked san Antonio. Interview questions were pretty standard. I was interviewed by a doctor who works at the school and also has a big private practice.

Got a seat with conditions. A minimum of a "B" in all my current classes. I already have a guaranteed B+ in one class.

gpa 3.32, 330/340 oats.

I am heading back in May to look for apartments.

How long did it take after the interview for them to notify that you had a seat?

I got my acceptance email within a few days of my interview. I know that my file was complete before the interview. My advice is to make sure your official transcripts and letters are in. One of my college profs took 2 weeks to send his letter of eval (had to remind him almost daily but it was worth it).

Good luck!

I have an interview on the 17th!! Very excited.. my first choice. Can't wait! I just hope it doesn't take six weeks to get an answer.

I had my interview on march 20th and was accepted about a week later. Just like everyone else who got accepted mines conditional (gotta get B's in all classes).

isnt this one of the new schools that just opened up, just wondering why it would be your first choice 😕

maybe you were referring to the interview date

It could easily be someone's first choice...by proximity.

I was unaware that the new schools opened this year, so I applied to UIWSO in March. When you turned in your application to UIWSO how long did they let you know they had an interview after that? Also, after your interview how long did they tell you that you were accepted?

About I was notified about my interview about two weeks after i submitted my application and then my acceptance about a week and half after the interview.

I applied last Tuesday, and got a call last Wednesday! Have an interview this Friday 5/29/09!

The interview, tour, and QA went very well. 😀 I may get a decision via e-mail this weekend. :luck: For those who are curios, the interview was one on one, and closed file. It was very relaxed, and there were no extremely difficult questions. Some of the questions were: Who has been your biggest motivation in choosing optometry? Define professionalism. Give 5 words that best describe you, etc. I was very impressed with the school and their program. A very positive experience overall. 👍
