Just wondering if there's anyone here who switched from surgery (or any other specialty) to anesthesiology who now regrets it?

If so, why, and what do you miss about your previous specialty?

I regret looking on the SDN Anesthesiology forum and

NOT SEEING posts like yours.

Anesthesiology is THE GREATEST THING IN THE WORLD! All watch us with uncontrollable envy!

Gaseous,
Didn't you end up somewhere in the Northeast? Like Penn or Columbia or something. I'm only asking because I remember your match post...and I thought we ended up at the same place (Penn?)

Regardless, I didn't even realize how many negatives I used in my half witted remark. Cheers to our forced jocularity.

I do think this is a semi-serious thread, so if anybody has any
bait-switch-and-regret stories...post'em.

I regret not switching sooner 😀

above, behold, more posts from wonderful anesthesiology SDN-ers.

The only reason I asked is because I know of a few people who wonder about their decision to switch.

But it seems to me that most people are very happy and don't regret it at all, which is exactly what I want to hear.

Thanks for your responses.

Are you serious? Have you ever spoken with anyone in medicine outside of your little corner, like a surgeon?

Cambies list of top Ten things he will miss in FP

1. Endless mountains of paper work
2. Handling scut from specialists
3. Train wrecks who refuse to get better or die
4. Hearing, "Oh wait, I am not finished yet."
5. The malingering patient
6. The patient with a list of complaints
7. The abusive patient
8. The narcotic seeking patient
9. Referring all of my interesting cases away
10. Feeling like I am wasting my time

This list could be longer but can't spend the entire night on the computer.
I realize that no specialty is perfect ,however after spending 100k to obtain a medical education I should at least find my work somewhat interesting and rewarding. Is gas paradise no but it is as close as I am going to get to it career wise. I am not talking about money either. I am not trying to draw fire this is simply my view. 😛

Good luck on the interview trail.

There have been times where I think it would have been easier & less stress to stay in family practice, but for the most part I think I made a good decision. The majority of these moments of regret occur while on call between 10pm and 6am, shortly after the code pager goes off!

And I agree with every bullet point on CambieMD's post. It put a smile on my face to read them and think back to last year when I was putting up with that crap on an hourly basis.

at my old program about 1-2 residents a year are either ex-surgical residents or ex-fully-US-trained-general surgeons - from what i hear (i am close friends with a few of them) they all wish they had made the decision sooner... and none of those guys (and 2 gals) regret it
