Hi, I normally hang out in the psych forum, but I've got a patient who is taking epiduo for her acne and it's costing her a couple hundred a month out of pocket. I'm curious what your thoughts are on this med cost.

I looked it up and it seems to just be two generic meds in a combo gel. Does anyone actually prescribe this stuff?

If you contact the reps for Epiduo, they can provide samples and coupons that can decrease the cost

But otherwise, yes, it's a markup on two generic meds that just happened to be combined.

Benzoyl peroxide can actually be purchased over the counter and I'm not convinced adapalene adds enough efficacy to be worth paying for if cost is a concern for the patient

Yoh should definately have your pt talk to his or her dermatologist. One of the problems with topical medications is that most of them are very expensive. Thats why you dont see them on cheaper formularies like walmarts 4 dollar drug lists. If a pt tells me that they are paying 200 dollars for something like epiduo I try to remedy the situation as quickly as possible. There are many other options available and if the patient does not have insurance that will cover anything most derm groups compound their own formulations for tretinoin that are much cheaper when paid in cash then getting similar producfs from the pharmacy.

By far the best generic-turned-brand trick in recent years was Solodyn. Almost a decade prior the same company worked absolute stock price wonders with Lidex.

yes, I rx it all the time.

just give them separately as generic if cost is an issue. Convenience cost money.
