Anyone taking the GRE ????

Just wondering if anyone is taking this summer/fall for applications. 🙂 I will be taking it sometime this fall haven't decided when yet. Since the programs I want will take GRE or MCAT and I don't feel ready for the MCAT I'm going with the GRE.

I'm not applying this year, but I'm may consider taking the GRE sometime later. I need it for applying to some grants and fellowships. I don't know, but I feel that the GRE is more angering than the MCAT...haha. Are you going to take the subject test? I heard that was real annoying.

Well as far as I know I'm only taking the general test. I have to clarify that with the schools though. How could it be MORE angering? I'd expect less anger and less frustration as the majority do WAY better on the GRE than MCAT. Although those percentiles are RIDIC for the GRE.

The general should be cake I think. If you take the bio subject test, it should be quite tedious since they make you recall some stuff from the ole Botany and Zoology days. Like specific stuff😉. I think the Chem one is pretty rough too. Its definately doable. But if you've been preparing for MCAT for ages, Botany and Zoology kinda go out the window..haha.

Are you taking GRE to get into postbacs? or for grad school to get a PhD? It would seem like it would be hard to get into med school with GRE scores no?

I'm taking it for post baccs, to clarify Master Programs. And rumor has it there are a few post-baccs that if you do well in their program you don't need to take the MCATs 😉 I might be aiming for them. I'm not sure of which ones they are.

very true, but you still have to apply to med schools anyways (unless these postbacs are ones that have a linkage with an automatic interview). and since you have to apply to med schools anyways, wouldn't an MCAT be more sufficient for the role? What im asking is, why take GRE when you can take the MCAT if you're vying for med school admissions?

I personally was going to also take the GRE for masters programs but then decided against it cuz its kinda ridiculous to have to take the GRE and then take the DAT later btw i'm a predental student. So i'm just gonna look for programs that are going to allow me to substitute my DAT score for the GRE.
I think another way to avoid the trouble of taking entrance exams just in order to pursue a masters is to apply as a non degree student for one semes and then have your status changed once you reapply after the first semester.

Good points. Which brings me to another dilemma. I just met with the other school I'm applying to this afternoon. Both will take either MCAT/GRE.

Problem being is that the one school apps are due in Dec and other one they say early 2007 although I asked if i could submit in may after my year of classes next year and she said that be fine.

So do I try to just take the MCAT early? The school where apps are due in Dec really a GRE would suffice. If I did well in that program there is an automatic linkage. Plus I'd have to take the Aug MCAT and that is NOT happening.


The school which I can submit next May (my top choice right now) would take either so I could take the MCAT early and see how things go. Although it seems that GRE scores usually can be higher than the MCAT. So now I'm more confused if I should just nix the GRE and just take the MCAT for my first choice school. *sigh* This whole process is just screwy.

I wouldn't mind just studying for the MCAT at a later date (like next summer) but ... who knows. Any feedback for this lost woman?

hey,

I'm in my 5th year of my Ph.D in immunology (hence the name). A Ph.D. is a training degree for a career in research. Research is an awful career with respect to money, security & lifestyle for all but the lucky few who make it to tenure without dropping out or loosing funding.

I can not stress this enough.

The few professors you meet are the cream of the crop, most of their friends that they entered their Ph.D. programs with are likely no longer in research.

Go for the MD or DDS as if your life depended on it. Otherwise you may end up like me; a grad student who after 6 years will have graduated with a degree that requires you to then do at least two 3 year post-docs ($35-$40 /year) before entering academics ($60-$80/ year). 12 years total.

Go for the MD or DDS.

I just got home today, and heard another message on the answering machine for my wife. About 4 times a week she's getting calls offering her jobs. Good jobs. Jobs you can take out a huge mortgage on and still save for retirement/kids/cars/fun.

Guess which degree she's got?

If you feel more comfortable doing the GRE to use it to apply to programs which sounds like you do then go for it. the general GRE test isnt that tedious anyways. My friend studied for a week and got a 1250 which is acceptable to most masters programs. you could always take the MCATs later if needed

Does anybody know if you can get into PhD program with MCAT?
