Anyone teaching in a catholic school (or has anyone ever taught in one)? I was offered a job teaching chemistry but I don't know how many personal/sick days there are. The teachers are unionized, but I can't get ahold of the union reps, and I won't be presented with the contract until next week. Plus, there are no teachers at the school I can ask. I'm worried about taking time off for interviews. I know these things vary from district to district, region to region, but if anyone has ANY info it would be greatly appreciated. I'm tearing my hair out here.

I'm teaching math at a Catholic school right now. I get 8 personal/sick days a year. If you need extra days, I think they deduct pay. However, this probably varies for each school....

As for interviews, my boss is being very understanding, and as long as I don't take off more than 8 days, she doens't mind. It might be a little tricky, b/c parents might start to get upset if you are gone too much. However, I think as long as I stay on top of things and have lectures planned for the subs, it should be ok.

Good luck! You can PM me if you have more questions 🙂

My wife just started teaching in one this year. I think she has 10-15 sick/personal days (I'll edit the post after I check with her). They have two fulltime substitute teachers to teach when the regular teachers aren't there. Why are you reluctant to take the job? Realistically you will need to take 1-2 days off per interview, so even if you only get ten days you should still be able to make at least 5 interviews (which should be plenty if you stagger them at least a few weeks apart so that you can cancel some after getting accepted somewhere).

I'm reluctant to take it because I'm worried that I might not be able to get the time off for interviews. I don't want to screw the school over, but I sure as hell don't want to lose out on any interviews.

You really only need to take 1 day off for interviews. Try to schedule them on Mondays. That way you can fly there on Sundays and relax b/f your interview.

I think if you plan it right, you should be fine. They can't *stop* you from taking days off. If you miss a meeting or two, then they will deal with it. If you are really worried about what the school will think, make sure they know you are applying to medical school. "I am applying to med school, so I might have to miss a few days here and there...."

What are your stats like? And how many schools did you apply to? If you applied to like 30, and you have awesome stats, then you might have a problem.... But otherwise I think you're stressing too much 🙂

I don't know if my rambling helped any....

Hmm... after looking at your mdapplicants profle, you do have awesome stats... and you did apply to lots of schools....

On second thought, you really are going to be cutting it close. Are you sure you can't contact a teacher or a union rep? You probably won't get an interview invite from all 20 schools. So you should be ok. You'll probably get 8 personal days... and if you take off more than that, you'll get half pay. So technically, you will have 16 days off....

I can't tell them I am applying to medical school. I have been honest about it on EVERY interview and I have never gotten an offer. finally I avoided mentioning it and got this job. My stats are 37 mcat, 3.64 gpa, 3.74 bcpm. i applied to 22 schools.

i felt bad about not mentioning applying, but i needed a job so badly and NO ONE would hire for a year. i applied to so many places too.

arg!!!!!!!! 🙁

see, i dont care about the pay at all. (i mean, i care about being paid for working, but not for losing pay for missing extra days). my concern is that theyre not going to allow me to take off.

so lets be honest. i know nothing about teaching, but the fact of the matter is a) you dont want to give up a good job and b) they're going to give you the time off... with your stats and the schools you applied to, youll probably have a couple of acceptances before the interview season is over so youll have the chance to pick and choose.....

Yikes. You're in a tricky position. If you really need a job then take it... Keep in mind that you will also be getting some holidays that aren't national holidays (or at least we do). Therefore, you should be able to schedule interviews on these days... which should help a little. Are you complete at schools yet? You'll be gettign lots of time off for Christmas.... that might help a bit.

Here, I'll be honest. My stats are a lot worse than yours, I applied to 22 schools, and have 2 interviews already. Since I only have 8 days off, I am already wondering what I am going to do if I get more than 8 interviews. I'm hoping that I'll get an acceptance early so I can decline some interviews. As a last resort, I get 8 days off at half pay.... although I have a feeling my boss might be a little *annoyed* if I use them. But what can you do? I too needed a job.. any job. Although I was honest about applying to med school... so my boss does know that I will be going for interviews.

If I were you, I would still take the job. The pay isn't too bad (MUCH better than being a lab tech... at my school anyway), so you'll be able to save a lot. If you PM me the name of your school, I can tell you if it's the same one I am at. My school has sister schools all over the US.

Oh. That case, you're stressing way too much. They have to let you take these days off. Double check your contract b/f you sign it, but by law, you're entitled to your sick/personal days.
