Hello! I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving 😀 I apologize in advance for my long and silly post...

So I'm trying to decide which of my remaining interviews I should attend - and yes, this is probably something that I can only answer for myself...but, I seek your advice fellow SDNers.

1) So I'm in at NYU (yay!)
2) I'm definitely still going to UTSW, Case, and Wisconsin interviews
3) I'm considering canceling Tufts and UMinn

Reasons - Well, I'd really like to live in NYC, but I'm a little concerned about the cost of living and some other things, which is one of the reasons why I applied all over. So for Tufts, I feel like the cost of living is not much less - and I don't think they're that strong in my intended research area (immunology)...plus they only accept ~4 people... (So it seems like I've made up my mind?? Maybe I'm just waiting for someone to say, no! Tufts is awesome! You should totally check it out!!)

👎thumbdown👎 for indecision!

For Minnesota I am really on the fence, they are really strong in my research area, but I have no idea if I would like Minneapolis, so I definitely think I need to go there to be sure. HOWEVER - I haven't bought my ticket yet - so I would need to do it REALLY SOON, (the interview is next Thursday)

The other mitigating factor is that both of these interviews are scheduled for next week (not this coming week). Which is the same week as the "make-up" week for my physics lab. (Which I will need to take advantage of because I have missed a lot of labs) So it would be academically beneficial for me to cancel both of them...

Gahhh! Thoughts?

withdraw from both and cut yourself some slack - it's scary to start making decision but it sounds as if you've already done so (at least for tufts and you should keep your sanity and withdraw from minnesota)

anyways, just my $0.02

I vote for cancelling Tufts and going to U Minn. I agree with you that Boston is not a good city to be living in on a grad student stipend, but I imagine Minneapolis would be very affordable. Plus, based on what you said about your research interests it sounds like U Minn might be a good fit for you and Tufts probably isn't.

Congrats on the NYU acceptance, BTW. 🙂

Axe both. Do it for the sake of your schedule, though, and not because of Minneapolis. It's a nice town and a good place to be a poor grad student.

Also, on Tufts, I think you meant to say this: They enroll 4 per year, not accept 4 (though I've heard rumors they're expanding a little bit). They do, however, have a reputation for interviewing many more than they accept, which is bad from your perspective.

I don't know where you are geographically, which is something else to consider, just based on ease of travel. But based on what evidence I do have, I say axe both. Worst that happens, you go to NYU.

Yeah cancel both. I've withdrawn from two interviews, initially with some regret, but looking at everything I need to do in the last 3 weeks of the semester, and the miniscule likelihood that I would have attended those two schools, I am very happy with my decisions. Congrats on NYU!!
