I'm not sure if you're talking about the COMLEX or USMLE but for the COMLEX - the abbreviated items are on page 11 of this http://nbome.org/docs/PEOrientationGuide.pdf

they should be pretty much the same acronyms. but i am asking the USMLE to be more specific. on the USMLE website the examples they give use other acronyms that are not on the list of acronyms and they say that practicing physicians grade the patient notes so even though some acronyms weren't on the list of acronyms they're ok to be used because they're common knowledge.

I use the acronyms above everyday at my hospital and so does everyone else, however,i am sure different hospitals have different acronyms that they use so i thought i'd ask on here.

Just an FYI, not calling you out or anything, but those are abbreviations, not acronyms. Acronyms are when each letter in the word stands for an entire word in a phrase. So, SCUBA for example is an acronym. For your question, those are pretty basic abbreviations, I would think you'll be ok. But I would probably just write them out on a test.

thanks, yeah you're right.. they are abbreviations. so you've heard of them? i think they're pretty common personally, we'll see how pressed i am for time. hopefully i'll get a lot of kids issues, there's no phyisical exam there's really no PMH or Meds for them... I wonder how they came up with the fact that an H&P should only take 15min and that a note has to written in 10min or less.

don't worry RussionJoo

In the little cubicle/area where you will sit and write or type your patient note, there is a printout of acceptable abbreviations. its pasted in your little area. every person will have one.

dont waste your time....worrying. 😳

i remember no such list... lies i tell you, lies... and besides who's gonna sit there and look that sh!& up anyways... please, that'll kill more time than anything.
use the common ones and write it out when possible, just to be on the safe side.

@ markglt - megha881 is not lying. even i had the same list.

@ russianjoo - I agree with megha881. There was the list of abbreviations in my cubicle area too. At least that's the way it is in the Los Angeles center. I don't see how the other centers would be different.

Should be uniformly the same. Anyhow....there was the list and me being an FMG it helped a little. But in the end, there was more than enough time to write a note and I wouldn't sweat it to remember all the shortcuts.

Remember you aren't writing down all the positive and negative points, just the positive and negative points that are relevant. I studied abroad for medicine and when i came to take the exam it was write after my final year med exam....i didnt even study much at all and I passed....try not to stress. (i know...hard to do)

GOOD LUCK! 👍

thanks everyone for posting however, my question wasn't about the list of approved abriviations, i have seen that list before. it was about those specific abreviations that i listed. even the practice notes that the USMLE website has up states that the note contains some abreviations that aren't on the list of abreviations but since practicing physicians grade the notes they'll be able to understand some abreviations not on the approved list, so i was asking if these were common enough to be known by others or is it only common in my hospital.
