anyone used www.premededit.com to edit PS?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wouldn't pay for a PS reading service until I've exhausted all other options at my university. And remember, you get what you pay for.

I need to start a website to take money from neurotic pre-meds. We are taking this whole process to far, time to throttle it back and relax a little.

OP, I've used it and I've also met Dr. Duello in person. Incredibly passionate lady! She has worked on the adcom for quite some time (20+ yrs I believe?) so she has tons of experience working with premed students. She edited my PS and returned it within the same day and also offered to give me a second revision for free. I'm not sure if she does that for everyone though; however, she did tell me that her turn-around time is 2 days MAX.

I mean it's only $30 and she has given me the best advice on my PS thus far. I've also utilized various resources such as people at my university and SDN's PS reader list.

"I can tell you the secrets of getting into med school. You just need to make 13 easy payments of $49.95."

i would normally not pay for something like this, but Dr.Duella is ONLY asking for $30 which is why I wanted to ask for some reviews from those who have used her services.

Go for it OP! $30 is minuscule compared to the amount of money you will spend on the rest of the application process.

thats my thinking. ITs only 30 bucks, not like the other ones that charge 900. Cheaper than an application from a school

I took the chance and paid. I'll let you guys/gals know. It's just $30. Nothing painful, and besides, I was gonna spend my $30 on something stupid anyway.

Please let me know..I need help with my PS

I submitted it last night, no response yet. I wonder what the turnaround time is, considering all the crazy pre-meds are scrambling to submit their apps today.

Why don't you try asking a friend or an SDN reader to look it over? I'm a lil busy rewriting my app atm, but if I get a response back from Dr. Duello soon, fix up my app/essay, and submit it by Friday, I'm more than happy to read your PS.

You're offering to read a PS and critique it when you submitted yours to a professional editor?

I'm a good writer, but I just wanted extra feedback. I had good reviews on my PS from several SDN readers. Just because I submitted my essay to a professional editor, does not mean I cannot write.

i emailed her and she said turn around time is 3 days.
I hope you come back to this thread and share your experience with her.

Back! She wrote me an email with suggestions and had me call back at night to discuss the PS. She had really, really helpful advice on how to change the PS. I basically rewrote my entire PS based on her suggestions. I have to work on my statement now so I don't have time to discuss everything, but I hope you give her a try. I don't think she does nitpicky grammar edits, but she gives you helpful tips based on her experience as a previous adcom member.

btw, a helpful tip is that many pre-meds end up talking about how volunteering and helping people makes them feel better about themselves and what they learned, but you also need to emphasize how you want to volunteer or be a physician for the greater good. She really emphasized the whole "do good" aspect and talk about your aspirations for the future. I'm not explaining this too well, as I'm exhausted from working all day, but yea...

Do you mean you actually talked to her on phone to go over your PS? if so, then i am VERY impressed. Even if its just completely via email, your review has me convinced.

Also, what was her turn around time?

Glad you found her service helpful! 🙂

I think 2 days. I think you won't find much help if you already have a stellar statement, but her advice was good for what it's worth.

I tried this service. I was very surprised that that I got feedback from Dr. Duello within one day. She did not do gramma or sentence correction. Instead she gave me some general advice.
She thought my personal statement should have something to let me stand out and convince the Adcoms why they should admit me. However, I just wrote a lot about my volunteer experience and answered the question why I am interested in medicine,, but not the question why me. I still did not know whether I need to change my personal statement since I feel that my qualifications are shown in other sections of the application. I use the personal statement to show why I am interested in medicine and my passion for caring for patients.
Any suggestions or opinions?

Thanks!

Figure out your story. Sell your story. Only you can do that.

I think since most of us haven't had any life-changing/ save babies in Africa type of experiences, standing out can be difficult. I think the approach you took with talking about your volunteer experiences should be fine. From all the sample essays I have read, this is the approach many take. Then again, what do I know. I am just another neurotic Premed. lol🙂

OK so here is my review :
the turn around time is very rapid. I had my first edited essay back within a day.
She sent my first draft back and told me that what I already had was strong. She made some grammatical changes and reworded some of my sentences to make them sound a lot better. This I was very pleased with.

Now here is what I wasn't too pleased with: Besides the grammar and sentence structure fixes, the other changes she recommended weren't very helpful. She recommended in my essay I include what school I attended and what I majored in. Considering the character limit, why would i put this information in my PS when it was already in other parts of my app. She recommended that I talk what speciality I am most interested in. I didn't feel comfortable discussing this because I wanted to keep a focus on why i want to be a physician not why I want to be a certain specialist. Plus I am sure I will be changing my mind on my choice of specialty so it just didn't feel genuine to write about it in PS. She recommended some other stuff too that I just can't put in my essay w/o going over the character limit. Plus I would like to save some of my ECs that I didn't include in my PS for secondary essays.

I wish she would have made more recommendation on how i can further improve the current content of my PS instead of just telling me what to add more. It would have helped if the things she is recommending me to add to my essay complemented what i have already written but these additions would completely break the flow of my PS as they just don't go with the overall theme of my essay. I kinda feel like she made these recommendations on what I should add more just for the sake of giving me some sort of a critique. I hope I am not coming of as someone who just can't accept criticism on my essay. The reason why I was willing to pay someone to edit was so they can tell me what they think about what I have written and how I can improve this.

I guess the reason why she didn't really critique the current content of my PS is because she said my PS is already strong. idk😕

Would I recommend this service to other premed: Yes, especially to those who think there draft needs a lot of help. Maybe not so much for those who are capable of writing a strong essay on their own. The main reason why I was attracted tho this service was because its ONLY $30. In $30, you get her to edit 2 drafts of your essay. I rate this service 7/10.

hope this helps.

That was pretty much the same advice I got from her, which is somewhat contrary to other opinions on SDN. I feel that the answers to "why me" are usually implicit.

I agree. Her advice basically made it seem like I should make my essay into a summary of my resume.
