I will be starting my Psych residency this year and am feeling a little lost. I studied (and did 2 years of residency) in Europe and was lucky enough to get a pre-match without any USCE. I am sure the system is not that different from what I know (Germany) but I am still expecting to be totally lost in the beginning. Maybe someone can answer a few questions for me.

1) What procedures are you expected to already be able to do? Especially during the med and neuro rotations... central line placement, lumbal puncture etc..

2) Are there any good books that go through things such as patient note writing, charts etc. I am sure the format is different here than I am used to.

3) What does an average day look like when on the in patient wards. When are rounds? etc

Sorry if these questions seem dumb but I am nervous to get thrown into an unfamiliar system.

Thanks for the help!!

1) ask the residents at your program - it varies and you will learn what you need on the job. you will not be expected to already know how to do an LP or central line etc already though plus if you have
2)you will learn this on the job. there should be an orientation period before you start. if insufficient, consider a week of shadowing where you can pick this up through observing and reading through patients' charts
3) ask the residents at your program!

Not being funny but how are we supposed to know there is considerable variation in these things not just between hospitals but within (e.g. some services may have PM rather than AM rounds etc)
