I'm taking the august MCAT and i wanted to know how many people are taking it and applying. How many are applying before they get their scores? after they get their scores?
For those who did this last year...what are the chances of getting in? Did you wait until you got scores to apply? Do you need better stats than the April MCAT applicants? Thanx 🙂

This is my first time taking it in August and I have already submitted my application to about 13 schools. Good luck to everyone who is doing the same 🙂

I applied and was accepted to two scools, PCOM and LECOM, after taking the April and August tests. I turned everything in before I new my April scores so that the schools would only be waiting for the August results. Anyway, I had no problem and I think my first interview was in November.

I took the August MCAT and was accepted to all three schools I applied to. I did apply before I received my scores. In fact, your goal should be to have AACOMAS completed by August 15 or so. DO NOT concern yourself about completing it at the expense of studying off the MCAT, however. If you are limited on time, finish the MCAT, then bust your butt to get the AACOMAS turned in. By doing this, AACOMAS will be waiting on your scores, so that as soon as your scores are released, your primaries will be sent in. This gives you nearly the same edge as the April applicants. I interviewed in December and January (1 and 8), so I didn't have to worry much about the rolling admissions!

I took the August mcat last year, and was accepted at several schools. Adcoms know that there will be quite a few people who are taking the August test, and they won't give away all of the entering class slots to the April test takers. I recommend that you make your applications in advance of getting your scores. Last year the scores didn't come in until the last of October. You should get your primary apps (AACOMAS and AAMCAS) finished, send your transcripts in and get your letters of recommendation in to each school you are applying to. That way your file will be complete as soon as the schools get the scores. It is not a problem to get admitted with the August test, but you should not procrastinate about getting your paperwork in. Good luck!

Thanx!
So far i have my AAMCAS application almost done, but i havent started the AACOMAS yet...i plan on getting them both in during the last week in August though.

I took April MCATS and did awful.... I then took the August ones and brought up my score considerably... but not high enough for M.D. but that didn;t matter to me because I always wanted to go D.O. anyway.
sent in secondaries to LECOM, PCOM, and OhioCOM. I got in at both PA schools but didn't even get an interview at Ohio prob because of my PA residency....

Yes you can get in with August MCATS!
Pat 😉

I got in last year with just August MCATs, and I applied the first week in September. (My stats weren't wonderful either.) I received secondaries in October and November and made sure I sent in responses within one week of receiving the secondary. My interviews started in the beginning of January and I had interview offers through March. (I decided on PCOM though because it was my first choice and first interview.)

Best of luck applying.. 🙂

Took August MCAT last year, sent in my AACOMAS in January, got interviewed in last week of March, got waitlisted 2 weeks after, got off the waiting list in June...........
Good Luck!!!!

for those of you who got in after taking the august mcat, what were ur scores/gpas?

thanks!

I applied in june of last year before I took the august mcat. So the only thing they were waiting on was my scores.

My gpa was 3.5 as a Liberal Arts major and I had an average 3.0 for science prerequisites. My mcat score was low. Too embarassing to say. But I had 7 years experience in Healthcare and lots of volunteer experience. Plus, I know how to "write" my bio.

I was interviewed last November. They called one week before to say when and where. At my interview....I was drilled and grilled. 😱

But I came through the interview just fine (I knew my biochemistry) even though I suck at standarized tests. 😀

So...mcat ain't everything. They look at the "whole" picture. I was accepted and now I have just finished my first 3 days of medical school.

So if one part of your bio is poor (ie, gpa/mcat), then work hard on the other parts.
Good luck to you.
😛

Thanx for all the feedback!
Especially with the MCATs coming up, it's stressful thinking about the exam and whether or not i'll get in...but you guyz give me hope 🙂

As far as my interview: there were 2 guys. One was a DO and the other was a PhD in Biological sciences. The DO was nice and encouraging. The PhD was nice too...but he had more of an agenda to follow. He literally pulled out 2 sheets of paper with 21 questions on it to ask me.

All of the questions were related to what I put on my application. Specifically, I spent several years in Dentistry. My interviewer asked me to name the components in an amalgam filling and describe the role (if any) that each component had in toxicity to the body. 😱

This was certainly a weed out question. But I handled it fine. I name three out of four components noting that mercury was the most controversial one due to its deleterious effects on the immune system. Currently, millions of people have these types of dental fillings. Some people tolerate the mercury vapors just fine but others don't. However, the American Dental Association is not about to condemn these fillings due to the sheer range of people who have them. Imagine the law suits!

Anyway, this is a hot topic in healthcare right now and since I had experience in this venue, naturally I got asked the proverbial question. 😉

Don't sweat any possible questions. Just know your bio well. If you put down that you are a Chemistry major or if you put down you have engineering experience...expect to get questions on it.

My interviewer was also on the admissions committee for my school (or so he said)and I assume he knew what my MCAT score was (very low). Therefore he wanted to see if the score was an accurate predictor of what I knew. Obviously, I do better with people than with standarized tests. Ergo, I was accepted. 😀

Well, congrats on your acceptance. I am doing my best to not repeat my huge bomb of a performance the first time i took the mcat. it looks like i have a good shot this time. best of luck and thanks for the reply.

hey sporrt...
what else is it about then? what school did you get into and what else did you have that beefed up your app?

thanks

Personally, I think the interview, my medical experience as a Respiratory Therapist, and the fact that I had recs. from two D.O.s helped alot. I was accepted at LECOM and PCOM. OH yeah, both docs were PCOM graduates.
