I was just wondering if those with experience moonlighting in the ED during their residency have any advice for those considering the possiblity.

Specifically, when did you feel confident or comfortable with your skills to begin moonlighting?, is there anything you would have done differently? did it prepare you for the real-world of emergency medicine better than just doing residencey alone? were you the only doc covering the ED? how long were your shifts? do you need the permission of your residency program?

any help would be great...other than the whole controversy with moonlighting discussions

thanks

I moonlit during residency. Yes, you have to get permission from your PD. No, we were never on single coverage and I don't recommend that. I went to UC Davis and many of us worked at a county ER about an hour away that was staffed by a lot of our grads. They were always willing to answer questions. The medical stuff wasn't too hard, but it's good to have people around wwho understand the administrative, political and systems issues at that particular ED. We only moon lit as third years.
I think moonlighting is valuable when making the transition from resident to attending. I know our group will not hire new grads who have not done moonlighting.
