I'm almost about to get a job as a 9/11 dispatcher. Its Full Time and pays $14/hour with 2 weeks vacation, one week of sick days, and 14 full days of holidays. I was already accepted into medical school early and this is my senior year. I'm not doing anything else outside of this and volunteering at a clinic 3 hours a week and classes.

I was wondering if this job is stressful, and if anyone managed to balance 35 hours a week with classes (I know some people work with classes/MCAT/15 hrs research).

I knew someone that did work as a 911 dispatcher. It is a high stress job, but you can make a big difference in the lives of people. It is frustrating because you can't get directly involved with the situation at hand.

Being a 911 dispatcher is an extremely stressful job, I know people that have done it, for some it worked out, for most it didn't, its really up to the individual. I personally wouldn't recommend it, but again, its person specific.

I work as an 911 EMT, and I work with a lot of people who are also dispatchers. Being a 911 dispatcher is an EXTREMELY stressful job, but you can make an incredible difference. If you can compartmentalize and not bring your work home with you (tough calls, etc), then you should be okay. Once you work a shift or two, you will most likely know if you will be able to manage being a dispatcher and being a full time student/with research, etc.

100/10 NOT WORTH IT. You’ll get super burned out and you really really don’t want to start medical school burned out.

Way easier ways to make $14/h. Walk away... seriously

The things is, I've always been interested in crime/law enforcement. In fact, a cop was the first job I wanted to be when I was growing up.

Have you completed an EMD course?
