Hi everyone,

I'm having some confusion over CME credits right now. I graduated from a DO school, but attended an MD residency where I am the only graduating DO. I am getting board certification through ABFM. I applied for a full medical license in Arizona through the Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery. They just issued the license to me which needs to be renewed by December 31st, 2019 and it states:

LICENSE RENEWAL AND CME: This license will need to be renewed by the Renew By date listed above. Pursuant to A.R.S. § 32-1825, each
licensee shall renew the license on or before January 1 and obtain 20 hours of approved CME during the same year. A minimum of 12
hours must be in AOA Category 1-A. After your first renewal at the end of your issuance year, you are required to renew your license every
two years. During the two years prior to each renewal, you are required to obtain 40 hours of approved CME, 24 hours of which must be in
AOA Category 1-A. Your participation in an accredited residency or fellowship program while licensed is counted as 20 AOA Category 1-A
CME hours for the same year in which you participate in training.

Now I am confused about what these AOA Category 1-A CME credits are. All I know about maintaining the ABFM board certification is that I need 150 CME credits every 3 years where a minimum of 50% must be in person conferences (will not be affiliated with any medical schools or residencies). I currently have AAFP and Uptodate.

How do I get these AOA Category 1-A CME credits?? Do I have to be a member of the AOA? Will these credits count for my ABFM? Was I supposed to apply for my medical license through azmd.gov?? Thanks to anyone who can help!!

As a DO you can only apply for licensure through the osteopathic medical board.

20 Category 1-A is basically just going to a DO conference. The best way to check would be to contact the the AZ osteopathic board directly. A lot of times boards consider AOA and AMA credits interchangeable, but some do actually require AOA CME.

I believe AOA credits do count towards ABFM, but there might be some restrictions.

Great, that is a relief that I applied for the correct license! I talked to someone via ABFM chat who said AOA CME should count for Division I credits. I looked through the CME FAQ on the azdo website and it says being in an accredited ACGME residency should count for 20 Category 1-A credits for that year so I guess I should be fine until the next renewal cycle in 2 years. I'll have to ask the AZ osteopathic board if I can submit AAFP CME as DO CME.
