Hello,

I have a couple of questions regarding applying for AOA EM residencies during my fourth year. I am currently OMS-III, and I am in the midst of setting of up my aways. How terrible is it if you are only able to do 1 or 2 aways in EM? Yes, I know certain programs 'favor' students who rotate there. And what can I do now until applications are due to strengthen my application for EM (besides STEP 2). Do you need SLORS for AOA programs? (I will not be applying to any ACGME programs, maybe some dual accredited though)

Also, if any fourth years who have matched into an osteopathic EM program are willing to answer my questions via PM, that would be much appreciated. I understand it is more and more competitive each year, so don't hold back.

Thanks.

I understand it is very important to do aways for DO EM programs, but dont most programs understand we have a limited number of electives. And even more so sometimes these electives all dont fall in the prime audition season. So doing 2 aways and a home program seems like a lot to me, but I'm just concerned that I will only get 3 interviews from what people keep talking on here. Oh well, time will only tell!

You'll get more interviews even without an audition. But don't be surprised if they don't rank you as high as the students that did an audition.

Well I guess as long as the programs still give you a realistic chance of matching there and the interviews are not just false hope.

I think most osteopathic programs find themselves in the luxury of having considerably more competitive applicants than spots. DO programs are probably very 2-week rotation friendly allowing you to go to more places.

Not all students who rotate at a program ranks that program highly or at all.

Youll be fine. I didnt do a single AOA rotation and had plenty of interviews. It is just beneficial to do DO rotations to up your chances.

Any idea of what the COMLEX range is for osteopathic EM?

I saw a mean of 497 on some file within the last year. Keep in mind that's the average...

This is definitely the best advice. You cant rotate at all the places you apply to and/or interview, there's simply not enough time.

Sort of a random, dumb question.

When you guys fill out apps to certain programs to apply for a 4th year rotation slot, is it okay to print them out and fill them out by hand and scan them back or do they want us to fill it in on Word?

I have done both and it's not that big of deal. As of now I have 4/6 rotations I applied with two pending(one MD and one DO). The biggest hold up for me about one was a required essay. Is that common now in EM?

I haven't encountered one that requires an essay.

I'm looking through feedback from prior classes from my school and there are definitely people matching EM (both DO and MD) with <500 on level 1.
