I'm applying this cycle. I APed out of Gen Chem and have only taken Physical Chemistry (pchem) lecture as far as inorganic chem goes. I want to apply to a few dental schools (NYU, Tufts, USC, etc) that don't accept AP for prereqs. I have already graduated, and I am currently working. If I put gen chem as a "planned course" for winter semester (January 2016), would it hinder my chance of being extended a pre-jan admission offer/ interview? I scored 21 on GC, 22 TS, 3.3 GPA, 100+ hours of shadowing, decent/average ECs. Thanks for your advice🙂

*First time posting, boyfriend let me use his account to post since I don't have one.

It shouldn't hinder your chances of getting accepted now, however, if you don't actually take the classes, they will rescind your acceptance. Can you take the class fall semester vs winter though?

I would bring it up in interviews and tell them the situation. Hopefully they will be reasonable. I think it's stupid for you to have to take a semester of gen chem just to check a box like that. I would tell them you have it as a planned course in case you absolutely have to take it, but you've already demonstrated success in inorganic and is it possible to count your APs/DAT instead.

For tufts, if you have two semesters of ochem with labs, they will count that towards the upper level for gen chem. I called and asked.
For NYU, do you have any biochem with lab or pchem with lab? If you do, they will accept that as upper level for gen chem.

Thanks for your responses! These are some of my top choices for dental schools, so I would definitely take gen chem lecture and lab if I knew I was going to get an offer. I wanted to put it off until winter semester because I'm currently working 8-5pm and most of the 4-year colleges around me don't offer evening courses. I feel like taking it at a CC or online would generate another problem, instead of alleviate it. Further, I don't really want to spend $2000 - $3000 to take gen chem lecture/lab if they weren't going to admit me anyways. I really hope they won't think I'm avoiding gen chem and not offer me an interview or admissions because of it or at least until I take it.

@DodobirdFiance thanks for your response! I've taken two semester of ochem w/ labs, but only biochem lecture and pchem lecture. I did do honors pchem.. not sure if that would help. Would I still have to take an inorganic chem lab then for NYU?

I will probably call these schools to clarify my situation 🙂

I got interviews at both NYU and USC with AP credit, so I think you will be fine if you took higher chem courses. Anyway, email schools so you have something in writing in case they try to say something different later.

For Tufts, that should be fine. I am unsure about the lectures without labs, though. They all want lectures with labs..
I called about 15 schools to make sure if I can apply with my classes (I already graduated this year).
