I obtained a copy of my official college transcript recently, hoping to get ready to fill out texas and amcas application. To my surprise, my AP courses and the classes my school assigned to those AP units were not listed on the transcript. It simply says...

Transfer Credits
Advanced Placement 05/03 10.0 UNTS
Advanced Placement 05/04 20.0 UNTS, etc

I know many schools take AP units and allow them to be used to fulfill certain requirements. For most schools, I don't care about the AP units and there are plenty out there that don't even recognize AP units, but for a few schools that I'm looking to apply to, I need my AP Spanish and AP Pyschology to count. My school even assigned my AP Spanish and AP Pyschology course to specific classes within my university, so they are assigned units and not simply non-assigned lump sum units. Is there anything I can do? What is odd is that I come from a school with over 600+ medical school applicants/yr (yes, one of the Uni of Cali), and it's odd how with so many applicants, my school still leaves them out. I have over 54 units (qtr units) or AP and I figure some of them ought to help me in the process if I can include it on my application.

How does amcas deal with AP units that are not broken down specifically on the official transcript?

This is surprising. At UC Davis, they're broken down by courses and they are required to be listed on AMCAS when I applied last cycle even though I was only given units for them.

I would ask your school's advisors for their advice. They would know better than us.

Well I think you can list them, but if you didnt get a grade then AMCAS doesnt count them toward anything (so they have 0 effect on your GPA). Just look it up on the AMCAS help thing once you have access to it, it will be more accurate than SDN or your adviser. If you have questions after that, call them.

Hi there,

I had a lot of AP units and also went to a UC, and my transcript doesn't even go that far, it just says how many AP transfer units total I had. I just listed them out, I mean, the number of units I had matched the total, so they corresponded, and no one has given me any grief or asked me to confirm it at all (well not yet...but I've been accepted etc. so if they're going to do it, they better soon!). Even when AMCAS verified my application, they didn't ask. I attributed all the credits to my undergraduate institution, since they are officially granting the college credit, and then I put HS for Status and there's a Course Type that I put AP. I would proceed like that, and if anyone gives you grief, you can cross that bridge when you get to it, however like I said, I've been accepted more than 1 place and no one's questioned it.

I would just becareful for schools that do not accept AP credits to fulfill prereqs, since there are some. For those schools that will use it and have doubts, I'm sure they will get in touch with you if there's a problem, and you can request your AP score probably to be sent from the AP people to the school. So no worries.

Hope that is helpful!!! Good luck!!!
