APA sponsors

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think that Argosy was also a sponsor in 2012, wasn't it?

Not funny at all. It creates a conflict of interest for the APA since they love taking money but wouldn't dare to hold Argosy accountable for their crap programs.

Anyone else think it's funny that the APA '13 convention is sponsored by Nova Southeastern & Argosy?

Thanks for posting this Briarcliff.

Maybe Argosy and Nova can sponsor the APA conference on the internship imbalance too.

They did this last year, with just Argosy I believe. Now it is Nova Southeastern too? Any thoughts about how to address this? I am not going to an APA conference while Argosy sponsors it, and I will let APA know about.

It's a shame that the governing body of psychology seems to be so disconnected from actual psychologists and grad students. It seems wrong to me that applicants at Argosy and Nova are probably the last people you would expect to find presenting data at APA.

IIRC, Argosy has been sponsoring the convention for the past 3 years, probably longer. I *think* Nova is new.

Nova seems to be pushing itself more towards FSPS "standards" (huge class sizes, low match rates, high tuition, etc), which is sad, as (a) this didn't used to be the case and (b) they've produced some very good psychologists in the past.

This.

Someone who attended a panel on the internship crisis last year told me that someone from Argosy was on it, IIRC. So, sadly, you're not too far off.

It's not surprising that the APA is hemorrhaging members every year. Total disconnect with no appreciation of who they are trying to serve. I haven't been a member for about 10 years and I have no plans to do so in the future.

I find APA to be useless as an organization. It is chronically disorganized and can't seem to advocate effectively for the profession. The COA is actually a separate entity and it seems to be running amok. The real reason I belong to APA is 1) so I can participate in the various divisions to which I belong. They really match my interests and 2) so I can put APA membership on my internship application and curriculum vita etc ... the absence of membership might be noticed and count against me. I now ask myself if I need t remain a member. after I graduate. What real benefit would I have as a result of membership??

After spending two years now on committees that have evaluated and discussed internship and post doc applications, I can tell you that not once have we noticed whether or not someone was a member of APA. To tell you the truth, I would be hard pressed to find any of my immediate colleagues who still belong to APA.

Also, you can be a member of Division 40 (neuropsych) without being a member of APA. I would imagine other divisions will follow suit if they have not already.

You should be able to join an APA division without having to join APA. I have found that certain divisions offer this option, though I'm unsure if all of them do.

*edit*

Div 40 (as mentioned above) and Div 22 allow for this option.

Taken together, I actually view both of these as a positive sign. To me, it signals that change is coming. I am no longer a member of APA. I would LOVE a practice organization that was responsive to it's members and I've given up hope that APA is that organization. I'm keeping my eye out for whatever rises from the ashes, however. You can bet I'll be advocating for that group.
