I'm going to be moving to Durham this year. Does anybody know which apartment complexes or neighborhoods would be nice and affordable to live in? I'm mostly concerned about the location (safe, quiet, clean, not too far from campus.) Are there neighborhoods I should avoid? Thanks for your input!

Umm- it depends, do you have a car or will you be trying to walk? Do you want to live in a nicer place where there are few undergrads or do you want a pretty nice place (gate, gym, pool) that is slightly more affordable but may have more "kids" living there?

There are some cool places that have popped up in downtown Durham and the "warehouse" district is pretty sweet, there are some amazing/swanky apartments with young professionals and entrepreneurs but they are a little more pricey. Closer to the med center there are a few nice apartment complexes but they may have a lot of upperclassmen living there (Duke only lets you live off campus one year, so mostly it is seniors, if you're fresh out of undergrad, this might not be bad).

More details on your preferences and I can try to help you out a bit more. Some people also opt for houses with other people in more residential neighborhoods, so it all depends on what you want.

Thanks for the reply, Fleur. I'm mostly looking for a one-bedroom place that's not too far from campus (<4 miles), quieter with less undergrads. I'm thinking a price range between $400 - $550 would be good since I prefer not having a roommate. As long as the neighborhood is safe, and the place is clean, then it'll be great. What are the downtown places and "warehouse" district you're talking about? I've looked into some places like Duke manor, princton villas, oak creek village, oaks at northgate, springfield apts, and holly hill. Do you have any ideas on these places?

I think you can go for Princeton Villas, nice place, the apartment their are big enough, safe place and will cost you within your budget.
