Hi there,

I will be starting the DPT program at NYIT in May, and I am not completely familiar with the Old Westbury/Long Island area in general. I plan on living off-campus when I attend, and I was wondering if anybody knew where I could start searching for apartments (preferably studio/1 bedroom) around the area? Like real estate agencies, websites, etc...

Thanks in advance!

I'm a recent NYCOM grad, thus am familiar with the housing. Generally, everything is overpriced and not particularly nice. Studios can easily run in the range of $950/$1000 and 1 BR $1100/$1200. A lot of students choose to live in Glen Cove (approx 10-15 minutes north of the campus), Westbury (10 minutes south), or Hicksville (10 minutes south). These towns are working class/middle class, whereas the areas immediately surrounding the school tend to be wealthier areas that don't have properties for rent. Roslyn would be the most convenient (5-10 minutes west of the school), but is more expensive and often doesn't have as many places available. I recommend calling the school and asking them if they have a housing list; if not, call NYCOM b/c they usually have a list, although it is often small. Another option is to call a realtor, but you will have to pay a realtor fee which is usually 1 months rent. It is definately more cost effective to have roomates (e.g. if you share a 3 BR apt, you may only have to pay $600/$700 a piece).

Best of luck.

Best of luck.

sammybear,
Thanks for your help. I'll be looking more into those as time goes on 🙂 I'm in Seattle at the moment so I'm just looking through craigslist at the moment for housing ads.

MPasc,
I'll be giving you a call about that studio apartment soon! Will it be available by May or June 1?

hey
i know of available housing
4 bedroom house in westbury, ny. about 10-15 min drive to nycom, within 3 miles of the source mall, roosevelt field mall, lots of major hospitals, walmart, pharmacy ,etc. rent is 550 a month, and does not cover utilities. cable/internet is obviously separate and split between roomates. there is available parking on the street and also on a driveway. house is in a quiet neighborhood which is a quarter mile from major highway exits also. house is also quiet and currently there is a surgical intern and me (4th year nycom student)
if interested, PM me

I will be starting NYCOM and Looking for apartment for the winter. Any of these apartments available?

hey I am also going to be a DPT student in May and myself and another girl are looking for two bedrooms. We do not mind if there are other grad students in the apartment, but we are looking for something affordable. Does anyone know of anything available or of any students who will be leaving their affordable apartments because they are graduating this semester? let me know 🙂
