Hi,
I am currently researching on the unopposed FM programs, esp those in California. I have looked up Contra Costa, Ventura, Santa Rosa, Natividad, Tacoma, Sutter programs. However, I could not find they posted any stats from their applicants. Anyone knows how competitive those programs are??
I have also read several threads about these programs. I know that Contra Costa and Ventura seem to be the toughest to get in and I know that they look at all aspects of the application. Nonetheless, is there a cut-off point for step 1 score??
My stats is not that good. My step 1 score is like low 200's (206), my m1/m2 grades are probably just average. So far I have not been doing well in my M3 year either. Getting 60's for my shelf exams but good clinical evaluation. SIGH....Nonetheless, I did hold some leadership positions in my M2 year and I am fluent in Mandarin in speaking, reading and writing. I don't know how good my stats and am pretty worried about my chance of applying these programs.

I will definitely plan my step 2 in early July/August. I know I need to improve my shelf scores and trust me I do study hard, but my native language is not English so....intensive reading is just killing me. (I have US citizenship and goes to a US medical school).

any suggestions?

Just do well on your Step 2. You should be alright. FM is a good specialty and it's not that hard to get in, esp for an US grad. There are many progs in Ca that take IMGs from Carib schools because they couldn't fill. GL.

I did my residency in one of these unopposed programs. My advice to you is to do a rotation in one of the programs and become familiar with the residents and faculty. If they like you in person and in a work environment, this will trump most deficits in your transcript.

Family Medicine is AWESOME. My first choices on my ROL are programs in NC. Those scores aren't bad, and being a US student seals the deal for you. I don't think you'll have a problem!
