Hey guys I'm new here and am wondering a few things:

If I have an F on my transcript in a math class (probability and stat), is that the end of the world for me?

Also, do pharm schools consider your extracurricular activities EVEN IF they have nothing to do with pharm? 'cause I'm a huge figure in the dance community - it's what I love to do. But my dad keeps tellin' me that I have to volunteer in a hospital or do research like everyone else and that "dancing is going to take you no where". I dont know what to do now, should I stop dancing and fill out that app for volunteer today?

Thanks!

the F can hurt the overall and sci gpa at first, but if you just improve and get and A or B (prefer the A but Bis still good) in all your other science classes as well as retake tht one math class, i cant see y it would be the end of theworld. i would know. i didnt get a F but a few C-'s would amount to the same thing anyways. do this from then on and your gpa will pull up.
In terms of your dance group. NOOOOOOOO dont quit it. your being in that group shows that you arent just a pharm/science nut but that you are also an individual. It also shows a sense of passion and commitment that will be impressive. But your dad is right only in the lines that you should know whether you would enjoy the pharmacy setting and i think your best bet is to either work or even volunteer at a pharmacy just to get some exposure. there are people who did not have any pharm experience, but do you really want to take that risk? pharm exposure can be as simple as dedicating one day a wk to a pharmacy. Its just can u balance your commitments.. i wish you luck on that. thats what i can say so far. im sure that others have much better things to say, but i feel that you shouldnt give up your commitment to the community whether or not its science related.

Hey vpxg0tryc:

I know where you're coming from.. I'm no dancer but I also have other avenues in my life I want to head outside of my professional career as a pharmacist. Really.. so many people do volunteer work and GPA 3.xx and join pharmacy-related clubs... I just feel it is a little rather on the boring side if that's all your life consist of. That said I think dancing would be a good thing.

If I was the interviewer.. I would view dancing as a positive activity as long as you know your priorities. Once you demonstrate sincere interest in pharmacy.. what you do in addition should only be better (my impression is USC and UCSF likes people with a life). Just because you're dedicated to pharmacy does not mean you have to give up other aspects of your life... that's what the doctor profession is for 🙂. But continue to pursue that aspect of your life.. keeping in mind that your dad is probably right that it'll amount to nothing (as to be really good at anything needs full-time commitment).. but do what feels right and makes you happy.

thanks for the advice guys. I got one more:

How do I start w/ the experience? Should I just go up to a pharmacist w/ a private clinic and ask to shadow him? Or should I work for that pharm technician cert., and get paid for my time. I dont know about you, but I dont like the idea of having to work for a certificate.. that allows me to work some more. Know what I mean? It's like school all over again...

tht is completely up to you. honestly, i knew time was of the essence when there was the option to earn my PT cert. but instead, i just asked to volunteer at a hospital pharmacy a few hours a week and it worked out well. shadowing a pharmacist is good too.. some schools require pharm experience which only consist of either shadowing or volunteering or working at a pharmacy (as a cashier clerk or a PT). If you think you just want to volunteer, just ask local hospitals to see if there is any volunteering in the pharmacy. thts what i did.
