Since we all know that it's not only about your stats, what do you think influenced a SOM to accept you? (gender, special research, URM status, under-privileged background, high MCAT, high GPA, bi-lingual, etc.)

I'll go first:

SOM #1 (midwest private) : I think my fluency in Spanish helped. The SOM has a group that helps provide medical care to the Hispanic community. I think my high GPA also helped.

SOM #2 (midwest private) : Same as above

SOM #3 (state SOM): Instate public and I met the threshold.

For all of the above.... 😀 I'm under-represented in medicine. I'm a blond male.

I know that I wasn't special. My MCAT was rather average. the blond remark is partly a joke....nearly all the SOM pics seem to have dark-haired males.

You don't say :lame:

Wait....

Are you saying that having a high GPA, good MCAT, speaking spanish at schools which have large local hispanic populations, and being an in-state student better than average are all things which can get you an acceptance at med school?

You just blew my mind!!

Because the adcoms and interviewers saw something in me that they thought would translate well into me being a physician.

Who knows what quality that was, maybe I'll know when I'm an attending myself.

A lot of the admissions process is arbitrary and voodoo-like. Don't wonder why they accepted you because most likely it comes to something completely intangible.

Cuz I know how to play the game

My mom did a great job with ironing my shirts. Steam really makes a difference.

Yes. That was what I was waiting for. 👍

"Started from the group home, now we doin' thangs" mentality.

Nice try op but this thread was doomed. If we knew why we all got accepted this website would probably lose half its business

My 4.3 GPA and 47 MCAT probably put me over the edge.

'cuz we know how to flame an sdn thread like a boss.

people be hatin' - honestly though, no clue, lol.

Edit: If you've got the balls, maybe you should ask the schools yourself (has anyone ever done this?)

i'm in ....
(no pun intended)

for srs, I just walked in and honestly I felt kind of like

one of my friends who was accepted told me that they said when she interviewed she just had a bouncy personality

Get the grades and you'll get considered. Sell yourself well enough and you'll get accepted. That's ultimately what it boils down to.

yeah ya know why they accepted me?

they said I always start worthwhile threads.

srs.😍

Are you trolling or serious. Reasons you are in:
(1) Good MCAT
(2) Great GPA
(3) Hardest Major on planet earth

Your spanish speaking ability probably contributed 0.0 to your final points tally. I hope you were not serious when you started this thread.
