Sorry if this is a simple question-but do you apply through ERAS for the first year of Internal Medicine (that's what I'm hoping to do) before ophtho residency? And if so, is there anything you do differently in applying for one year of medicine in comparison to someone who is applying for 3 year residency positions through ERAS?

Yes, it is a separate application for internship through ERAS. Programs will have separate codes for preliminary medicine (what you want) versus categorical (what you don't want). Another option is to apply to transitional year programs.
