want to apply to the dental schools I've chosen mid June. I will have 100 shadow hours, a chairty dental trip to Tijuana, letters of rec and my personal statement. However, I would like to study for the DAT from mid June to Sept 1st and then take the DAT. My question is, how important is it to get your DAT score in on time with your application? Is it going to hurt my chances of getting into my desired schools if I send my DAT in a few months after my application is received? I would really appreciate some GOOD advice from some one who KNOWS what they're talking about. Thank you!!!🙂

Most of the schools don't start reviewing your application until they receive ur DAT score...because thats when the application file is complete and they get an idea as to invite you for the interview.

Depending on how competetive ur school is...you may get in with late application (I have personally known some people who have gotten in even after applying late).

However, Keep in mind...it is always advisable to apply early!!!
Applying early basically means that give AADSAS some time to reveiw ur application so that schools get them early enough to invite you. If you work out the dates, AADSAS take about 4-5 weeks to send ur applications to the designated schools. Schools receive ur DAT score after 1-2 weeks of taking the DAT. If you wait till Sept to send in ur DAT, your application file won't be reviewed by the schools until Sept...if you consider that early for ur desired school then you may take ur chance. You may also call the schools and ask them when they start interviewing and processing!!!

It's ok to apply without having taken the DAT. Some schools won't consider your application compolete until you send your DAT scores but don't let that force you into taking the DAT before you are ready. Take the DAT whenever you want and fill out AADSAS when you don't feel like studying for the DAT. That way you're getting both done. Once you take the DAT it will be sent out to your schools and you wait to hear back from them.

You aren't the only one doing this. Lots of people on this forum will be taking the DAT this summer while they apply for the 2009 school year.

The longer you wait to take your DAT and complete your appliction, the lower your chances are. If you have a great GPA from a good school and you end up extremely doing well on the DAT, you could apply in October and get in, but if your grades are more around the average, I would get everything in as soon as you can. I would suggest you try your best to take the DAT by August first and have your application submitted by mid June so that by mid August when schools are really starting to go through applications and send out interview invites, your materials are all there. If you are worried about the amount of time you have to study, start now and just do a little here and there until June when you can commit a lot more time to preparing for the test.
