I am currently debating whether or not to run for a second term in my school's student government and I was wondering if it is worth the time commitment to continue. I am exploring Optho research options with academic institutions with the help of a local ophthalmologist and have 1 case study (2nd author) publication so far.

The main question is - should I continue Student Government or step aside to (theoretically) spend more time pursuing research?

I know that I am asking really early on, but I also know I am at a distinct disadvantage as a DO student.

Thanks for your help!

Small disclosure: I'm a DO who didn't match my first time, did a research fellowship and just matched this time around.

I founded an Ophthalmology Interest club, led a large service organization, and was part of the student leadership for clinical years. None of my interviewers mentioned any of those things. They all mentioned the very small amount of research I had, and questioned the quality of my school (which is common for DOs). In fact, I have a sorta interesting hobby, and I feel like they were more interested in that than any sort of leadership I did.

I did a research fellowship, and had a lot more research to talk about and was successful this time. I know that N=1, but if I had a time machine I'd go back in time and tell myself not to waste time on any student organizations at all. I enjoy community service and would have still participated, however the extra time was a waste that should have been put toward research. Good luck!

If you only have one case report your time will be better spent doing research.
