I am applying to 21 graduate programs (I/O Psychology) for Fall 2012. Yikes, I know... On some of my applications, there is a question: To which other colleges or universities have you applied? Should I really list all other 20 programs? Why is this question asked? What are they looking for or using that information for? Is there any way that it would be an advantage or disadvantage to list all of them, list none of them, or only list certain programs? Am I completely over-thinking this? 😳

From a website I found that has helped considerably with the applications process:

Applications often ask you for a list of other schools you’re applying to. I tended to conveniently “forget” this portion of the app, because I always thought it was a trick. Turns out it’s not! Definitely fill this out if you’ve chosen your schools well. I discovered that professors look at this not to see what their competition is and judge you for even considering other places – they look at this information to see how focused you are. They want to make sure you’re focused on their field of study, and not just applying willy-nilly to make sure you get in somewhere, anywhere!

here's the link too: http://clinicalpsychgradapp.wordpress.com/applying/the-application-itself/

Hope that helps..
