Hey guys I need some advice I'm a premed student studying for the august 04 mcat. I have heard of instances where those who applied late as in my situation did not get into med school primarily because the slots were already filled by applicants in the april exam. My question is can i apply for the following year i.e. august 06 by applying during the 04-05 academic school year.

What you were told, or what you thought, about not getting in with an August MCAT score is totally FALSE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I actually took the April exam, was sick, and bombed it which really really really hurt me (so this is a lesson for others too - don't take it unless you're SURE you're prepared). I retook it in August and got some interviews in the Spring and now I'm going to USF. Without my bad April score I'm sure I would have had more interviews too. So if you have a good application besides the MCAT go ahead and apply with the August score. If you have some serious weakness in your app (LORs, ECs, grades) then maybe wait and strengthen your app somehow. Hope this helps, feel free to PM me

Thanks for the words of encouragement I will be more optimistic. You had mentioned a good application, what did yours consist of if you don't mind. It will really help.

I had a good, but not spectacular application and managed to get in. 3.5 sci gpa, 3.56 cum gpa, 29 mcat, tons of volunteering in a coordinator position, some minor lab experience, dad's a surgeon so lots of experience in shadowing and seeing surgery, took a healthcare class which was KEY to my interview since my knowledge of the US healthcare crisis was the core of my discussion with the interviewer (who was also the admissions chairman). So as you can see I didn't have super super good grades or MCAT score, and I even took the August exam. So it can be done!

Thanks for the info it will be noted.

No, you can't. Those who aren't accepted for August '05 will have to reapply and reinterview for a seat in August '06. But don't get too scared by the August MCAT thing. While it doesn't necessarily help your application, tons of people manage to take the August MCAT and get into med school a few months later. There's a thread about success stories somewhere -- for encouragement, try a search for "August AND accepted."
