Hey all:

I would like to apply to DO schools (nova, lecom-b) without planning to complete a BS degree. However i have more than 100 credit hours (a bunch of college courses i took in high school included). I have excellent GPA (above 3.9) and letters from professors, 9 months hospital community service, leadership positions on campus, worked in different places, did educational presentations for new students, etc. I'm taking the MCAT this august, started studying already. I plan to shadow DO doctors this summer. I'm a minority student, born outside the US, strongly want to go into primary care medicine.

My question is: Is this worth doing? Applying w/o a B.S degree? If i ido, then should i send the application before getting my mcat scores back? 🙂 thanks and god bless you all!!!!!!!!!!

As long as those schools that you are applying accepts students without undergraduate degree, you should be fine. Make sure to check with each school since they may have different policy regarding this issue. You should send your applications before your MCAT score if you know that you did fine.

How come you don't want to complete your undergrad degree?

I'd check with the schools that you're interested in first. While many schools list that they'll take applicants with 90 hrs completed (or something similar), not very many people get in this way.

There are 2 people in my class that matriculated without having a BS, but they each were just a couple of classes away from completing their degrees. In fact, one of them has used med school credits to complete his BS now.

well, it would take me another year to complete my B.s, an an extra year to get into medical school. It's no big deal to me, but i was wondering if applying without a BS was doable. 🙂

because the thing is that 30 of the credits i have are from college courses i took in high school/some AP, mostly humanities. So i still have most of upper division left to do.

When I went to college I took many hours and completed the med school pre-reqs in 2 years, I applied to DO school and was accepted to KCUMB in a 3 + 1 program. Fortunately for me, they gave me a scholarship to defer until this fall. So to answer your question, it is possible; however, I would make sure to have some of the upper science courses, such as biochemistry, histology, and molecular biology etc. before going.

I hope this Helps.

Check with schools you want to go. If they say o.k., you might as well apply. You can complete your degree while waiting for acceptance. If doesn't work, you can re-apply this time with your degree.

If I were you I would complete my BA or BS regardless of what the DO school your interested in requires, you may regret it later on...just my 2cents...

application without a bunch of BS...shoot, I'm not sure it's possible!

most people apply before completing their bachelor's degree but most intend to complete the degree before going on to med school.

did you complete physics, general chem, bio, and organic chem sequence?

Also, if you apply for this current cycle you would not get into medical school until fall 2006. This gives ample time to graduate with a BS. This means you will have to explain why you decided not to go to school during 2005-2006 school year. I would imagine you would have to have a unique situation to explain this. lot's of people are parents, have a full-time job, and are going to school.

Good job on the grades!

yes i completed all my pre-reqs

even if i get accepted to next year's class i would still take biochemistry, endocrinology, and more physiology courses during this year.

Lunallena,

I got accepted to KCOM not have a BS. I am 2 classes away from getting my BS, but they didn't seem to care if I'm going to complete my degree before August or not. I'll be done with the 2 classes this summer anyway, but don't let the degree burden get to ya. BTW, I also am a minority(that's not counted as minority in med school). Best of luck to ya!!!
