ok i had a few questions regarding the osteopathic application process. Firstly, if we retake a class, just to make sure, only the new grade is accounted for in the gpa right? So that our undergrad schools (where the gpa is averaged) dont reflect the one that would be in the aacomas application? Also, If someone decides to take summer classes the same season as thier application process to med schools and they want those to be reflected in thier gpa as well, woudl they write their grades are pending and send them in when they are completed?

Yes AACOMAS will replaces grades AMCAS will average them. If you submit your application before your grades for the summer are in, it won't affect your GPA that schools will see. They will see the names of the courses as pending course workout (sort of like when I added my fall 09 classes this past May). It is likely you will get interview invites before you even have a chance to update the schools with your courses - and if its a strong GPA I wouldn't even bother unless you get put on hold.

what if your gpa is lower than the mean; should you wait until you finish those classes then apply?, but then august would be a little bit late. And don't you have to submit your final transcript in the year your waiting to get in either-way?

I don't really understand the first part but I would submit early. If you mean adding those summer classes will raise your gpa, it won't by much since you'll have at least 90 credits beforehand. You need to get verified by aacomas too which requires sending in ALL transcripts to them so they can check the grades against the ones you inputted. This takes a lot of time for some reason - a lot longer than AMCAS did. I wouldn't wait on summer grades, it won't help much. Apply early and if you get put on hold pre or post interview, you can always update the schools with excellent summer and even fall semester grades.

I would apply earlier in the summer, but only if your GPA is high enough to get past cut offs. If you need your summer grades to get above the 3.0 or 2.75 bump, then wait until August. August is still relatively early, but anything past September is kinda pushing it for the "early advantage". Check out this year's verification thread if you'd like to get an idea of the headache.

Hey guys, well I'll be taking my MCAT next year and I will be applying next year. I wanted to apply as early as possible, should I submit my transcripts, Lors and everything 2 weeks before you can fill your primarys? What else will I need to send quickly so my application gets verified? I am only applying to DO schools so I'll be applying to pretty much every DO school in the states. I will not consider the islands at all! I just would like to be ahead of the game.

Thanks a bunch

Do you mean you plan to apply May 2010 or May 2011? When are you taking the MCAT?

Day 1 when the cycle starts, sign up and start the application, then send in your transcripts b/c now they will have a file for you.

LOR don't go to AACOMAS. You could use interfolio, virtualEvals, or your school may collected all your letters for you, just depends on the school and you. LOR get sent with the secondary application.

The application typically takes only a few hours to fill out. Make sure you have a copy of your transcript so you can enter all of your information in correctly because you enter in all of your coursework. Good luck!

Interfolio, you just set up your account and request a letter from all of the people who you want to send one in. They can mail there letter in or email it. The website explains it very well.

Should I set up interfolio lets say a week ahead of time?

Another question about the primaries, does the "personal statement" change each time or is it the same? If it's the same may I have the question so I can submit it right away.

I'm just little anxious because I guess my time is coming next year.

One week would be fine or you may never even need it...it just depends on how many letters you are going to be getting and if they have a problem sending the stuff...you can search on here for more info on it.

Technically, I don't think there even is a question for the personal statement. You just describe you, why medicine, and how your experiences will help you succeed. There is a thread in the pre-med about Personal statements...go over it. Now the questions on the secondaries change for each school and sometimes from years, but you can look at those too.

Really you are way ahead of time. I would plan on a few months for the PS. Write it, put it away for awhile, look over it and change again, then have others read it. Also, do you know who your LOR are going to be? You can be thinking of them.

Thanks for the insight, I already have a ps done I'll just add to it here and there and make revisions. For the lors well I have 1 from director of the ED affilated with Columbia will have 2 years over 1000 hours and I started a volunteer program with more clinical aspects. Director of Pharmacy same hospital same hours, director of pharmacy where I work, director of ED in a different hospital who is a DO.

All together 4 LORs so far, not sure if I am going to need more. DO you think I should get more? I can get one from a professor who teaches at yale lower division for undergrads. I will also have 2 publications this coming summer with a Neurologist from Columbia so I can incorporate that. I'm just really nervous because I am going to have to retake physics 1 because I got a C. Also my first undergrad I was kicked out due to FA-medical reasons that I will explain in my essays. What more should I get done before applying?

Each school requires different LOR. Typically, a pre-med committee letter or 2 science/1 non science letter. Beyond the DO letter that you have the other letters are your volunteer letters and they aren't required, but you should send them. You have to have school letters though to attest your academic abilities.

Alright now I understand what I need to do and prepare for the upcoming cycle, thanks a bunch you really helped me out.
