Hi everyone!

I applied to D.O. School in December. Then I took the DAT this month (did well) and now want to apply for dental school Fall 03 as well. Should I list all the D.O. schools I've applied to as required in the AADSAS online application?

I'm feeling the admissions committees will view this negatively and mistake my earnest captivation with the dental profession with the confused mindset of a canditate who's not sure what he wants. THAT IS NOT THE CASE--I'm only now discovering the possibilities that lie in the dental field. Suggestions? Please respond fast as I've got to submit this thing to AADSAS today!!

Thanks!!

Whatever you do: DO NOT LIE!!!!!

I know of this kid who matriculated to NYU last year and he lied on his app cuz he applied to pharmacy schools at the same time and they kicked him out two weeks into the semester.

I would tell them. After all, there is a reason that question is asked on the application! If your motives are valid, then NOBODY is going to question you about it. I don't think it will detract from your application at all.

In the old days there was a class system to medical professions:

1. MD
2. DO
3. DDS
4. Podiety
5. Optometry
6. Pharmacy
7. If all else fails Law School.

Today the schools will know if you are truely interested in Dentistry! You need a good reason! Something other that you didn't get accepted to any DO schools. There are many good reasons to switch, but make sure you truely believe you want Dentistry!

Yes, you should tell the truth...

Now, realize you will probably be turned down by the dental school unless you have a very good reason for applying to both professions...

And why the switch anyway??? If it is b/c you think you will get into dental school instead of DO school, you should rethink this....

I have many classmates who wanted to go to medschool but applied to dental school instead, as they did not think they would get into medical school......they hate dental school

This is a pretty big mistake to make.....

Go to medschool if this is what you want to do and do not go to dental school just so you can be a doctor!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't be so hard on the kid. I know how he feels.

There are many kids in college who want to become doctors but don't have the qualifications to be accepted into medical school. It's easy to tell the medical rejectees to reapply but the process of reapplying is very time-consuming, expensive, and is without any assurance of getting into medical school on the second try.

And that is why there are some students going into dentistry because they can't get into medical school but dental school is the next best thing for them. This is only a profession, for pete's sake, and I can see nothing wrong with this. If they end up hating it, then that's their problem and you don't need to worry about it.

On another note, DOs are not necessarily that glamorous to med-wannabes. Specialty residencies are usually filled by MDs and DOs mostly land in primary care, especially in family practice. DOs are at the bottom rung of the physician ladder.

darnit!
i don't think they have a right to know, and this'll probably end up hurting me, but i'll go along with y'll. thanx! ashy

Desi #2:

You will be happy you told the truth. You DAT's are high and schools will like that and will forgive you for applying to both places. What would really suck is you getting in to dental school and having to forfeit your seat because you lied. This is a very serious offense.
