Maybe this is a silly question, but one of my schools' applications asks me what my primary career goals are, and two of the options are "applied research" and "academic research." Just to make sure I pick the right one, could someone clarify the difference between these two?

Seem strange because certainly many in academia do applied research.

However, I suppose what they are getting at is doing research within a clincial service position or agencey (ie., working at a counseling center and conducting outcome studies) vs working in a university of medical school setting conducting research, but not neccearily within a clinical service context or setting. This is my best guess.

not sure what academic is... but i would assume its the same as basic research which = research just to gain basic knowledge about phenomenon

applied = therapy, interventions, treatments etc. + applying the knowledge from the basic research
