So I just graduated this month.
cGPA: 3.29
sGPA: 3.0
14 W's due to bad planning, immaturity, etc.

Up until last week, my original plan was to apply this June 2017 to DO schools. I would take the MCAT April 2017.

However, last week, I received the wonderful news that I got accepted into the Johns Hopkins Masters in Biotechnology with a concentration in health science intensive. It is a program designed for students trying to get into medical school, and it even comes with MCAT prep. Only thing is that the program runs from next July 2017 until May 2018. The MCAT prep would be in my last semester of classes. I am for sure doing this masters program.

So it seems that my options are:

1.) take the MCAT this April 2017, apply May 2017, and do the masters program with hopes of getting an acceptance at some point during the year

2.) take the MCAT this April 2017, but wait until May 2018 to apply, and do the masters program

3.) relax and chill until the masters program begins in July 2017, complete the program and MCAT prep as normal, take the MCAT Spring 2018 after the program, and apply to med schools May 2018

I am very grateful I got into the program because doing well will help me redeem my lower GPA's and W's. I guess two opposing sides are apply this coming spring with what I have now, or apply next year after the program assuming I do well. However, doing poorly in the program will basically remove any chance I have of getting into a school.

Halp? 🙂

Hey everyone! I know this post may look long but please take the time to read and help out!

So I just graduated this December and am planning on eventually applying to medical school. My final cGPA is 3.29 and sGPA just above 3.0. However, my transcript isn't the most beautiful, and I have about 15 W's just from bad planning, being immature, and not trying my hardest.

With that gpa I'd take that opportunity at Johns Hopkins and run with it. You'll be able to add to your resume and get experience at a first class university. Can't beat that!

I was leaning towards the same thing. So you're saying apply AFTER I finish the program? When do you think the MCAT should be taken?

Also, after the program, I know I will have a grad GPA, but my undergrad GPA's will stay the same. Does that mean I still won't be able to apply to schools that have science GPA cutoffs (I know some schools have sGPA cutoffs at like 3.2)?

p.s.- your profile pic is hilarious haha

Unless you feel confident in your MCAT, I would suggest route number 3 and chilling out. Instead of rushing and studying for the MCAT you could retake some of your courses at a community college and boost that GPA. If you can boost your GPA, do well on the MCAT and your masters program, I'm sure you'll be able to get an acceptance when you apply in May 2018.

Apply ASAP then reapply if you have no other option. Only times being a re-applicant is hurtful is when you have nothing to add to an application. A masters will take care of that.
