Hey guys, I was wondering if I should apply to DO this cycle or next.

The advantages of applying this cycle would be that I could get into a school but maybe not my first choice. My advisor said the competition this year is very competative and it's scaring me tbh.

The disadvantages are that my stats will be lower than what I project them to be by next cycle (3.35 instead of at least a 3.4 and cGPA and 3.65 sgpa instead of 3.7). I would also be considered a reapplicant at some schools which I know looks bad. Also I wanted to retake my mcat which was a 501 (128 121 128 124) so I will be applying with a lower mcat this cycle. I might not get into my first choice as well. My co-author publication won't be out either which I was planning to publish it by next cycle. I also have not started my personal statement and do not have all of my letters ready and don't think I'll be ready to apply until mid to late October at least.

Schools I really want to apply to:

NYCOM - both schools
LECOM -all schools
WVCOM
VCOM
And a few others which were suggested by the wise Faha. However, these are my top choices.

Do i still have a shot at these schools if I apply this cycle? I have good EC's otherwise (which i talked about in a previous post) but my advisor is pushing me to apply this cycle just to see if I get in. Is she pushing me into a bad decision, or am I just being paranoid? Please advise, TY.

Nothing wrong with applying this cycle, but if you do do it now. Retaking that MCAT can be bad if you perform similarly.

Don't reapplicants looks worse? I don't want to ruin my chances at first choice schools because of my reapplicants status.

It doesn't matter if you're a reapplicant or not, but you won't have to worry about that if you hustle. I have worse stats than you this cycle and have an acceptance and hopefully more to follow. Do it now.

Congratulations, what school did you get accepted in? What were your stats? I'm also ORM sO IDK if that matters. You think I have a shot at my top choices this cycle?

That 121 in CARS might be a problem for you.

Would it keep me out of NYITCOM? I called the advisor and he said I could still apply and maybe get an interview because they don't cutoff at subsections.

Edit: NY resident idk if it matters

I don't know if it'll keep you out. You might have better luck at the Arkansas Campus. I applied to the OW campus with a 506 and a 123 in CARS and still did not get an II from them, but you do have a higher sGPA than me so who knows.

I know VCOM does like high GPA's so you might have better luck there. Keep in mind that you are a bit on the late side now as you won't be complete till mid October or so.

I looked up the stats for VCOM and it looks like I'm slightly above average in terms of MCAT for them but my cGPA is a little low, you think that's fine with an upward trend and a good sGPA?

I would say the sGPA holds more weight than cGPA, especially if you've taken some upper level science classes. Your MCAT is fine for a good amount of DO schools but your 121 in CARS could screen you out. Avoid ICOM and BCOM because they screen for a 123. I would say if you email the school and they say they won't screen you out because of your CARS score then go ahead and apply

You should apply when you have the best possible app.
