Hi

I posted earlier about wanting to apply for anesthesiology. I have not been able to do research and must begin a traditional rotating internship starting July. I want to know if anyone has tried applying to anesthesiology during their internship year?

I am concerned that doing interviews during internship year will be difficult. How does one actually leave for interviews if one is scheduled in rotations? Is this doable? Basically, I want to know if I can go to 10-11 interviews, probably during Nov. to January, considering that I'll be working my ass off during the year.

Also, does being a intern make one a better candidate for anesthesiology, especially for advanced programs?

Thank you in advance for your help.

My guess would be that as far as the match goes, all of the advanced spots that would allow you to start your CA-1 year in 2007 that would be available through the match have been filled through the match.

There may be spots that different programs have that through unforeseen circumstances have become available. The best way to find out is just to inquire.

As annoying as it may be, your best bet would be to enter the match again next year knowing that there may be a year to kill after your intern year.

As far as interviewing goes, you have personal and vacation days to use at your own discretion. The rotation will not like it that you are taking off, but who cares. You just might have to spend all 2-3 weeks of your vacation time on the interview trail.

Your best bet is not entering the match for a ca1 in 2008(that is your back up). Your best bet is to inquire to as many programs as you can as to whether they have positions that they have held outside of the match. Most programs will hold one or two spots for people that come to anesthesiology from a non-traditional source(military, research, transfer applicants). Some of these programs are already interviewing applicants for 2007 others are finished. I would send out emails with all your stats to alot of places and see what you find out.

Being an intern doesnt make you any better of an applicant. For the interviews you will likely have to use your vacation time.

So, are you saying that I should start contacting programs now even though I have not started my internship year?

I guess that makes sense. Also, if I'm doing 10 interviews, let's say, some in november, some in dec, the rest in janurary, can I break up my vacation time to use for those purposes?

You should definitely contact programs now. The spots they hold out are generally for people a bit further along than you or those who have significant research experience(MD/PHD types) but you never know. You will have to talk to your program about the vacation time. I would also plan on applying through the match and find something for the year off. Thats a back up plan but you want to go ahead and get started on it so you arent rushing around later.
