Applying for Anesthesia during internship?

Hi everyone, I was wondering what the chances are of matching anesthesia when applying during your internship year, for PGY-2 spots(or even PGY-1 spots for that matter), after not having success the first time around (during the match during your fourth year of medical school)?

Thanks everyone, I searched for this and didnt come up with anything relevant so im posting my question here. Sorry if this topic has already been discussed in length.

Sure...people do it if they don't match the first time and really want to match into X field (like for you, anesthesiology). There are always the logistical problems of finding the time to travel and do interviews while doing an internship, but all that set aside (which I don't know how people go about working that out)....you can apply for either PGY-1 or PGY-2. If you go through ERAS, and are matched in a PGY-1 spot then of course you'd essentially repeat your intern year. If you matched a PGY-2 spot through ERAS then you would have to sit out a year and do something else because as far as I know PGY2 spots in ERAS wouldn't be starting until the following academic year. For example, I matched an anesthesia PGY-2 spot (to begin in July 2008) and I matched prelim IM that began this July 2007.

As far as I know, if you were looking for no time off in between your PGY-1 and PGY-2 years, then you'd probably have to talk to programs individually and see if they have openings for an upcoming PGY-2 position in order to transition from your intern year directly to a PGY-2 position, and sign outside of the match if that's the case.

If you were speaking in what ifs, then it would still work the same way but you'd have to sign outside the match for a 2009 PGY-2 spot if you only matched a prelim this year in the 2008 match. (In order to have that direct transition without being forced to take time off)

If you haven't even finished your ERAS application then don't obsess about all these what ifs and just do the best you can and be confident and sell yourself.
