Hey guys would love some help
I would love to match into anesthesia but have a step 1 of 215 and step 2 of 214 am a IMG with graduate of 2016 but am an American citizen., also have a pubilcation and have 3 or 4 lors.
Since Anesthesia is competitive, I am aiming to also apply to IM prelim and even Surgery Prelim do you think that will better my chances at matching?
And I will need a personal statement for each right?
Also does that mean I have to apply for advance Anesthesia this cycle as well to have a position for 2021 cycle?
And what if I am applying at one program for prelim and C both, does that look bad?
Also if I get Catorgorical can I switch over after yr 1 so to have that count as my pgy1 and go into Anesthesia Ca-1?
And what about transitional year, what does that mean?
And R-spots as well?
Thank you for your help guys really appreciate it

Prelim spots can be a dead end but they are better than nothing and will give you an opportunity to develop connections. You do need to apply for advanced spots too.

A year of categorical internship can count as a clinical base year for anesthesia.

A transitional internship also counts as a clinical base year.

Good luck

I must ask, what have you been doing for the last three years?

I am not sure with 3 years of missing time you will even get into a residency let along anesthesia residency. Why don’t you know how to apply to residency nor what it means for different tracks?

I am sorry for the harsh reality check. You may need to address these before you have a fighting chance to get into anesthesia.

You apply for IM/Surgical prelim and advanced spot at the same time.

If you apply for a categorical IM/Surgical spot and matched, you will apply again for R spot(start 2021) or advance spot (start 2022) while doing your internship.

I personally think you should focus on IM or FM match, not anesthesia.

~40% of USIMGs who applied previously with your stats matched.

Since Anesthesia is competitive,

Not really, it's definitely one of the less competitive specialties at the present time.

I am aiming to also apply to IM prelim and even Surgery Prelim do you think that will better my chances at matching?

Yes, applying to advanced (and prelim years) alongside categorical programs will obviously increase your chances. Especially as an IMG, the advanced programs tend to be less competitive for each respective tier of residency program compared to similar strength categoricals because of the inconvenience of having to move again after PGY1. It's a great way to get into a decent program as an IMG.

And I will need a personal statement for each right?

You will need a different personal statement for the medicine prelims than for anesthesia. But if you are asking if you need an individualized personal statement for every single program the answer is no.

Also does that mean I have to apply for advance Anesthesia this cycle as well to have a position for 2021 cycle?

Yes.

And what if I am applying at one program for prelim and C both, does that look bad?

No, it's fine and is expected.

Also if I get Catorgorical can I switch over after yr 1 so to have that count as my pgy1 and go into Anesthesia Ca-1?

Not sure what you are even asking here... If you get a categorical match you automatically transition to CA-1 after your CBY at the same program, that's what categorical means. I

f you are asking if you can do the CBY year in a categorical program and then switch to a different program and count the CBY year of the categorical as the prelim year for another program... I mean, theoretically yeah but why in god's name would you want to? It would also be a match violation to try and switch to a different anesthesia program when you've already matched to one. I

f you're asking if you can do an unaffiliated prelim year and then match to a categorical program the next year and go straight into CA-1... the answer is no. Categorical programs have already filled their CA-1 spots from their own PGY-1 categorical cohort that will graduate from the previous year. You might sometimes get an exception if somebody in their PGY-1 at the categorical program gets kicked out or leaves and a spot opens up, but otherwise you would not be able to just skip the CBY of a categorical program even if you did a prelim year already.

And what about transitional year, what does that mean?

If you are an IMG with marginal step scores dont worry about it. TY is by far the most competitive prelim year and will not really be on your radar. It's basically a hybrid prelim year between a few different specialties rather than just doing straight medicine or surgery.

And R-spots as well?
You can only apply to R spots if you have already done or are currently doing a prelim year and will be ready to start CA-1 by July. So basically if you matched a prelim position this year without matching to an advanced as well, then the subsequent year you would reapply to advanced programs again, along with R programs you'd now be eligible for... but probably wouldn't want to reapply to categorical programs unless you'd be willing to redo your intern year.

OP you need to address the 3 year gap on your resume. Also why do you want to go to anesthesia?

It will be an uphill battle for you. Be prepared
