I'm a med student that's applying for research scholarships over the summer. Many of these programs request a student to develop a proposal with a specific PI of your choice.

My question is, will I be upsetting PIs, if I get multiple scholarships, and I have to pick just one. Should I worry about this or should I just apply to as many as I can manage because there are no guarantees.

Let me know your thoughts...

apply to as many as you feel are worth your time and don't even worry about winning too many. your PI would love that problem! Good luck!

sorry, I should have been more clear.

Each scholarship requires a different potential PI. So in the end I need to pick one PI for the summer. So I can't pick one PI and apply for different scholarships under that same PI.

ex1 is a cardiology scholarship requires research under cardiologist ex2 is a cancer scholarship under an oncologist....

Both applications require the PI to write a proposal with me, the , but i can only pick one for the summer.

I'm assuming you've done research with these PIs and/or have some sort of established relationship with them? If you didn't get these scholarships, would you still do research with them?

Just be clear about your intentions. I almost landed in some hot water in graduate school due to a miscommunication issue between myself and two PIs. I could see a PI getting a bit meh if he/she expected you to do research with them over the summer and you ended up somewhere else.

Personally I'd pick one. Good luck to you.

I don't have a previous relationship with the PIs. And I would consider doing research with them without the scholarships.

I just kind of wanted to throw out some options now, and then decide later. But I also don't want to lead certain labs on and waste their time. I'll just try to be as transparent as possible to avoid pissing people off 🙂
