So i am on the waitlist for one school for the 08 cycle and am now deciding that I will apply again.. my third time to dental school! I dont know why I am not getting in.

MY GPA is 3.5 cumu, 3.46 sci, DAT 19AA, 20TS, RC 17!!!

I need to get help on my personal statement: where can I get help??? are there any paid services, what can I do?
the more I get away from this thing, the more I want to be a dentist.. the more its running away from me, the more I chase it.

please help me.

You can try your school service about editing! It cost me 200 dollars to do everything. From checking grammars to structure of sentence.
If your English is a 2nd language, kindly ask your nice English professor, not a MEAN one.

Wow..What school do you go to? Its free where I go...hehe

try going to career services at your school or have family, friends and professors read over it. Also the people at kaplan took a look at mine ... free of charge.

Sure get someone to read it but you are already late submitting. They say the key is to apply VERY early. You missed that boat, so hopefully you can get it some other way. If you don't get in this year, call schools (don't wait until next cycle) and ask what you can do to improve your application or why you may not have gotten in. GL

hi,
thanks for your reply. SugarNacl, its not late at all. I have not missed any boat as you say. You are completely ridiculous for saying that. Its still early and I will be done applying by the end of next week!! I am editing and getting it done soon so July 5th is my deadline to submit and hopefully have everything done by August.. not late at all there.

anyways, thanks for being so discouraging

Did you ever ask the dental schools why you did not get in??? Stories like urs make me nervous to the bone.

If you didn't get many interview offers, it's your application. Do more stuff and improve the PS. If you got interviews but no acceptances, it's your interview skills. Do a mock interview and get feedback.

So you're applying for the third time and telling someone who got into school that their application strategy is ridiculous? I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I think I make a valid point. No it may not be super late, but I wouldn't say you are early. All of your stats are average. You need any edge you can get. Applying May 15th would have been a good start. Instead of being one of the first apps a school sees, you'll probably be somewhere in the middle of all of it. I'm not trying to be a jerk about this, and neither was SugarNaCl, it's just the truth. Applying early is extremely important, especially if you're an average applicant. I wish you luck and hope you get in. You are obviously very determined and want to be a dentist. Do a lot of research before your interviews and nail them. That's whre you're going to have to shine. Good Luck.

ShinyDMD, I would have to agree with SugarNACL and WarEagle on this one. As Wareagle said, your stats are not exceptional. I would say they are good enough to get you in, so there must be something other than what is obvious that is keeping you from an acceptance. It could be a number of things, i.e. poor LOE's, subpar interview performance, badly written personal statement, or no improvement between years. Have you considered that your late application submission maybe a large factor in your failure to gain admission thus far? I think you are naively discounting the importance of applying early and my view of early is within a month of May 15th. It comes a big surprise to me and SugarNACL, that you dont understand its importance in the process (especially as a third year applicant). Get your app. in ASAP!

Your stats are average which means you need a TON of EX activities to make up for it...Stuff like being the president of your dental club, research publications, shadowing dentists, etc are a must if your stats are just average.

My shadowed dentist encourage me to do some charity work like mission or sth. He told me that it show your commitment to your community. I am kinda scared when you got rejected with stat like that. Good luck applying

So you've filled out 2 years of applications and still couldn't get this one in until July? Bad move man. It won't kill you but for a 3rd time applicant I'd have gotten it in before June.

I would also be concerned about your interviewing skills if you get interviews and no acceptances. Or the way you act perhaps. No offense but there's a reason for the interview and a reason for some people getting rejected after one.

While I do agree with the gist of this thread, I must say 2 things-

1) You are not late whatsoever. Late is a month before the school's specific deadline. You are late for SDN but not in the grand scheme of things. Like yourself, I had to apply more than once (twice to be exact). Because I did not get in the first cycle, I made sure everything I needed was submitted pre June!!!! When I knew I was not going anywhere in March of 2007, I had my battle plan ready for May 15th of that year. I am surprised you didn't this time around.

2) Your stats are not average. Perhaps on SDN they are. I had lower stats than you with multiple acceptances and interviews. It's me that has the average stats--of an accepted student, not of an applicant.

While you may not be "late" per se, you're definitely not early. By the time you get your app in and AADSAS gets it processed, it will probably be August by the time the printout is mailed, and then another couple weeks for the school to process it, then decide to send a secondary, which you generally have 30 days to fill out, then you send that in and they decide to interview you. Odds are it is September by this time and schools are already interviewing people. The fact of the matter is that once the school starts interviewing and your app is just getting completed, your odds decrease.

Your stats aren't bad, but your RC score is a bit low which could hurt you. Many schools place a very high emphasis on RC ability due to the sheer amount of material you will be required to read while in d-school.

best of luck and try not to be so defensive.

hey shiny DMD,
I am a third applicant too.
I got a professional english teacher from craigslist and had him read and revised my personal statement. It cost me $20~25 an hour. After contacting with several dental admissions, I figured out that they want me to study further, like master's program rather than postbacc(if your undergrad gpa is not under 3.0), working as a dental assistant, or retaking the dat(my score is 20/20/19)
I hope this helps.
Good luck.

Applying for the third time too. Last two times were in 04 and 05. Submitted today. ugGPA~3.0👎 gGPA~3.8 recent DAT TS17/AA17/RC19/PAT19:scared:. yours look better than mine. Retaking for the fourth time in September.........man I am either passionate or stupid!😕
Tons of EC, tons of shadowing hrs and international dental mission, three kiddos, worked 35+hrs a week during school, own a chain of convinient stores (international) and GETTING OLDER!! Give me ALL the feedbacks😉 Sorry to hijack the threat....didn't want to start another identical one!!!
